I currently work for the local government as a social care worker with a 28 hour contract. I am on maternity leave which is about to finish. I asked to go back to work using the flexible working policy so that I could look after my children instead of working long shifts, which include 24 hour and weekends. I was rejected, then after speaking to the union I was advised not to appeal this decision but to ask for redeployment instead, this was also refused. I feel that I am being deliberately discriminated against, no one in my department has asked for flexible working before, and was told by HR that if anyone should get flexible working then I should. Now I am faced with losing my job. I am not sure what to do, the union are now saying that either I just work the impossible by continuing with my normal shift pattern or stop working. Any advice?

Do I have to become self-employed if I want to translate documents and help with benefit claims etc for Polish people? I plan spending 16 hours a week on it as I have college on the other three days. I am a single parent to a 4year old daughter. Would I get Working Tax credit with the childcare element?

I have been working for the same agency for about a year without a break. I worked all the time in the same company from Monday to Friday from 7.30 am to 16.00. After three months of working for them I fell pregnant but continued to work. I signed a contract with the agency which did not say when it was going to end. Right now I am on my Statutory Maternity Pay. My manager told me that I am not employed by them any more although I get paid by them and there is not any big difference if I am getting pay from them or the jobcentre. He said that he would also try to fix me up with some work after my maternity leave and that I am still active with them on the database. I would like to know my status right now and if I am entitled to maternity leave.

I work 15 hours a week for a recruitment agency in an ongoing contract. I am paid a set rate per hour and work set hours every week. I recently queried my holiday pay with them as it was less than my normal rate. The explanation they gave me was that the 'system' had a problem calculating my pro rata holiday so over a whole years worth of holiday, it would 'work out' to be the correct rate. Are they allowed to do this?

I am going back to work next month after maternity leave to a different role due to a re-organisation. My main concern is that I've had reduced hours agreed by my new manager but I have a feeling that the role will warrant more than the 30 hours agreed. The level which I'm at states that I should be able to work additional hours as part of my role. The whole point of me reducing my hours is to have a better work life balance. Where do I stand i.e. what number of hours would be acceptable on a 30 hour week?
