I'm currently on maternity leave until September, and I work four afternoons (1.30 to 5.00pm) at a building society, which in total is 14 hours per week. I also have another child who will be starting school in September 2009. I'm wondering if I have any rights to change my working times ie so I would finish before 3pm when I return to work this September or whether I would have to wait and negotiate next year.

I work in IT sales. They have refused flexible working on the grounds of reduced level of service, that it is financially not viable, is unrealistic and they do not have the resources to fund the extra person needed to cover the few hours I will not be in the office. They also claim that 9.00-9.30 and 4.00-5.30 are the busiest periods. I feel the points they have raised are completely unfounded. I have had an appeal and sent my response to the issues raise and they have treated this as a grievance. I work in a predominantly male environment. I was very poorly whilst pregnant and I believe they see me as being a burden on the company now that I am a mother. What can I do?
