Changing shifts: ask the expert

I am working part time. For the past 2 years that I have worked there I have done flexible hours around my husband’s shifts at work because of the children. Now my boss is saying that he wants to have set shifts and if I can’t work on my allocated nights I will lose my money. Is this legal?

In this case it may be reasonable for your employer to require fixed shifts if there is a genuine business reason.  If you can suggest a compromise which would mean both your employer and you are happy, this would be the best way forward.

I have worked the same shift pattern for two years. I work my holidays around my shift pattern and my employer says it’s not set in stone. Can you object?
