Maternity allowances for teenage mums: ask the expert
I am a Connexions adviser working with teenage mothers. Can you please advise me as to what maternity leave the colleges/6th form are legally obliged to recognise?
To be entitled to statutory maternity leave and pay a person has to be in employment. This therefore means that students are not entitled to statutory maternity leave and/or pay from their school, college or university unless they are students employed in a post (such as post graduate students who earn a salary). It is therefore a matter for the educational institute to formulate their own policy for dealing with such situations, for example, through allowing an interruption in studies and support for new mothers.

i am a support worker, i have a permanent job and also a part-time job, and my part-time job I work around 25 hours a week, and I have been working for the past 3 years. According to the policy of the two companies i qualify so can I claim maternity pay from both companies?
Our employment law expert Vanessa Wheeler comments: In theory, if you meet the qualifying criteria for Statutory Maternity Pay for each job you can clam it from both employers. It is not relevant whether it is a temp job or not. Likewise if each employer offers a contractual benefit for maternity leave you will be entitled to this also.
