I returned to work four weeks ago after taking 10 months maternity leave. It is a long story so I will try and shorten it, while on maternity leave I had a new manager and my old manager moved to another department. During my maternity leave there were changes to my position, it basically meant my role was being split up. I had very little contact with them during maternity leave and was not informed of any changes, most of the information came third hand. I really wanted to to retain the same or similar position which they were aware of but wanted to work four days a week. I was delighted when they said this was possible. I met up with my new and old manager who informed me that things had changed but there were lots of opportunities for someone with my skills and experience. I was excited about returning to work however I then found out that my new manager, who I had only met properly once was leaving. I went into work on my first day back and had a brief meeting with the new head of department who explained he was getting to grips with his new department and not making any important decisions. It then transpired a few days later that I was to be demoted because I could only work four days a week. This decision was made by a manager who had never worked with me. I complained to the new head of department, who was taken aback, I followed this up with an email and the following week he said it would be okay and they would come up with a job description. That was three weeks ago and I am still waiting, I chased them last week and he said they had a meeting but he needed to make changes to the job description. This has caused much stress as I really enjoyed my previous role, I am pretty sure the new job description will still be a demotion, please can someone advise me what rights I now have and how I should handle the situation? I feel I have been treated appallingly. During this time I have been given basic tasks and left to work alone - my self esteem is now very low.…

I am due to complete maternity leave on 23 July and then return to work on 17th August following annual leave. My employer has informed my department and is due to formally inform me that my role is being displaced to London which is two hours away via rail. All staff are being told they will have a job but it will be in London and the company will help them find other jobs in the company if possible. The timetable for this has already started and this will all be sorted out by 1st September. I have been advised I am also within these deadlines yet I do not return until 17th August and therefore feel at a considerable disadvantage. They also want me to arrange my flexible working hours to take into account I could be working in London whereas I currently live five minutes from work and wish to do compressed hours which may not be possible if I work in London. Surely I can readdress my working hours if and when my place of work changes to this displacement otherwise I could risk redundancy at a significantly reduced salary.…

I am currently on maternity leave from a full time management position in retail. Due to the hours of the business being open I was wondering about doing the following to enable me to look after my child as much as possible: apply for flexible working just for one day a week as a sales assistant (assuming they would agree to this) and then get a second job as a waitress in the evenings. My conditions of my maternity leave just state that I must return for six months after my maternity leave otherwise I must pay back my maternity allowance ( I had the full package from them due to my length of service) Legally am I doing anything wrong?…

I am currently on maternity leave which is due to end the second week of September, and I did inform my employer that I would be taking additional maternity leave until January 2011. Although since I have been on maternity leave the company have been sold and the office I worked in has been relocated to an area out of my remit with a young baby! My company has made me aware that the office has relocated and sent a letter to me informing me that the consultation of an office move was taking place. I have since decided to return to work earlier than planned and, will be informing my employer that I will be looking to come back to work in October 2010... although the new office location is not accesible for me.Where do I stand? Should I be in receipt of redundancy from my employer due to the relocation (I have been employed for four years and two months approx).…

I am due to start my maternity leave next week (on my due date) and have just received a letter from my current employer stating that my current role is being made redundant. The only role they can offer me is more hours and in a different location - which is not what I want. Please can you advise what redundancy rights/package I would be entitled to (I have worked 4.5 years with them - so am assuming i get four weeks stat redundancy pay). However, am I entitled to this aswell as my full SMP for 9months? If I take the redundancy package and SMP, am I then restricted to when I start applying for another job?)…
