Resigning while on maternity leave: ask the expert

I am on maternity leave and not due back at work until January.  However, a change in my personal circumstances makes it impractical for me to return to my job.  As I know this already, should I tell my employer now? If I do will I be giving up the rest of my SMP?

You just need to tell your employer that you will not be returning from maternity leave. It does not matter whether you do this now or give your 3 months notice – your employer is still liable to pay the full amount of
your SMP.
