When a nanny is not working out: ask the expert

I have employed a nanny but she’s not working out. What do I do now?

If you have employed your nanny for less than one year you can simply give her notice. How much notice you should give her should be stipulated in her employment contract, but otherwise it depends on whether you pay her weekly or monthly. If you pay your nanny weekly one week will suffice, whereas if you pay her monthly you should give her one month’s notice.

If your nanny has been with you for longer you must follow correct dismissal procedures. Please contact Nannytax for more information on how to proceed.

Please note that if your nanny is pregnant you need to be very careful as a pregnant woman is protected against unfair dismissal even if she has been employed for less than one year.

Does the 1 year period cover notice period – my nanny has been employed for over 11 months but has a month’s notice?
