Help. Tips. Information

I hurt my back at work over 6 years ago and this combined with other medical problems meant I could not work for long periods over the last six years. I would like to try and go back to work part time, but am worried about my prospects as I have no current work experience and still suffer with lower back pain. I have had management experience within the catering industry.

Firstly, it is important that you realise that working in an environment which requires physical activity (particularly using your back) would not be suitable.
Secondly, you need to do some self analysis – work out what you enjoy doing – for example, are you involved in any parents groups or school committees etc., and then identify what skills you are using at present within these roles.  You mention that you have had exposure to management supervisor’s roles.  You will need to list all the skills involved in doing this role, for example negotiation, time management, delegation etc.  Out of all these skill sets, you will need to analyse what you really enjoy doing… do you enjoy the interaction with people, for example, and in what capacity (mentoring, tutoring, listening and solving problems etc.).
From that you will begin to identify your transferable skills and those skills you really gets a buzz out of.  Then you will need to research any companies that you like the look of – go on the working mums website and identify possible companies that you like the look of.
Then you can start the process of putting your cv together – if you require professional assistance here, you can contact A Brave New World who would be able to do this for you.
