Australia proposes gender equity plan

Australian businesses with over 100 employees will have to report on equal pay and flexible work issues under new legislation, the Government has announced.

The legislation will require businesses to report on how many women they have employed and on their employment conditions, including pay equity. It will also allow for spot checks to see whether they are complying with the new law.

Businesses which do not comply with the Act will not receive Government-funded grants or get industry assistance.

Australia’s Equal Opportunity in the Workplace Agency, to be renamed the Workplace Gender Equality Agency, will be given $11.2 million over the next four years to help enforce the legislation.

Businesses will use a new IT system to report about their businesses online and mobile support will be offered. The first reports are due in 2013.
