Bargain corner

In these straitened times, many people are looking for ways of cutting corners or getting a bargain. One of the leading companies which specialises in the kind of retail discounts many working mums are looking for is MyVoucherCodes.co.uk. Workingmums.co.uk asked them how they work and what they have to offer mums.

The company says it has seen a big rise in interest since the recession began which has led to a substantial increase in traffic to the site.
A spokeswoman said: “Shoppers are increasingly aware that you can find discounts and vouchers online that you would not normally find in a high street shop. We find that most of our audience base are people who were planning on making a purchase anyway. They usually come on our site and find a voucher which saves them 25% and benefit from this.”
MyVoucherCodes.co.uk has a team which contacts and liaises with different companies, including Debenhams and Thomas Cook. The retailers send the company both deals and savings found in their stores as well as exclusive voucher and discount codes. People who go on the website can search for either companies or products they are interested in, for example, if they are looking for children’s clothes, they are presented with a list of retailers with current discounts on these products. Customers can print off the voucher and show it in store to receive a discount, or type in the voucher code if they are buying online to receive the savings.
MyVoucherCodes.co.uk makes money from the advertising space they sell throughout the site. They also earn money on a commission basis depending upon which voucher codes are used.
They say there are no catches for customers. The spokeswoman says: “It is a completely free service to use. Customers do not even need to register or sign up to take advantage of the discounts. Vouchers are now commonplace within the retail industry. Retailers have sales and discounts all the time, what we do is make shoppers aware of them and give them the option to use the vouchers or not.”
The site was set up in 2006 and was an instant hit. Sales hit over £200m within the first year and doubled to over £500m in 2008. Since then the company has expanded to many other countries such as the US, Canada, France and Australia.
The offers carried are for national or international stores and so aren’t limited to a certain location, although they may carry an expiry date.
It is updated on a daily basis. The company says it generally carries vouchers and codes for as many industries and types of companies as it can, ranging from Clarks and Next to Marks and Spencer. “This is to ultimately give the customer a larger range of choices,” it says.
