Equality legislation under scrutiny in red tape challenge

The focus on the Equality Act is open until the end of June as part of the Government’s ‘red tape challenge’.
The Equality Act 2010 is the current main topic of discussion until 30 June. It requires equal treatment in access to employment as well as private and public services, regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation. In the case of gender, there are special protections for pregnant women.
Also up for comment are 151 employment regulations, including additional statutory paternity pay and leave, amendments to maternity and paternity leave dating back over the last decade and flexible working regulations and amendments.
The Government says employment regulation is hindering business and states that if enough people comment that a regulation should be discarded, ministers will have to argue why it should be protected or it could face being repealed. 
The red tape challenge website says: "Once you’ve had your say, Ministers will have three months to work out which regulations they want to keep and why. But here’s the most important bit – the default presumption will be that burdensome regulations will go. If Ministers want to keep them, they have to make a very good case for them to stay."
