Mobile working puts SMEs ahead
Adopting mobile working puts companies ahead of the game, according to a study of 1,000 SMEs.
The study, commissioned by telecoms specialists Plantronics, shows SMEs with fully mobile workforces were 60% more likely to be predicting growth in 2009 than those companies which do not allow remote working. Plantronics has compiled a ten-point business survival plan.
Senior managers being replaced by lower skilled staff
Demand for staff is falling at its fastest rate for over a decade with evidence showing senior staff are being replaced by employees with less experience and on lower pay.
The forecast comes from the latest Report on Jobs research by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG.
Mike Stevens, head of business services at KPMG, said: "Salaries for permanent and temporary hires are falling at record rates. In practice, we believe this is partly a result of employers replacing senior people with lower level and lower paid staff."
Local authorities may have to cut jobs
Local authorities may be forced to cut jobs to fund pay rises, according to the Local Government Association.
Acas has has agreed that the 2008 pay award of 2.45% offered to council workers should be increased by 0.3%. The LGA said council resources were tightly stretched and jobs may have to go to fund the increase.
Britain 8th in Europe on gender pay gap
Men in Britain earn 21 per cent more than women, higher than in the European Union average.
The figures show that Britain has the eighth biggest gender pay gap out of 26 European countries compared by the European Commission.
New book on being a working mum
Fiona Millar, education campaigner and wife of Tony Blair’s communications guru Alistair Campbell, has written a book on being a working mum.
Called The Secret World of the Working Mother: Juggling Work, Kids and Sanity, it draws on her experience as a mother of three who has worked full time, part time and been a stay at home mum. It aims to show the reality of being a working mum and says mums need to be more organised to overcome the problems that they face.
