Job Details

St Albans is a unique English Cathedral City with a colourful history which can be seen in the Roman remains and variety of beautiful architecture, heritage sites and conservation areas.  Set within Green Belt, off the M25, A1M and M1 the District includes a cathedral, historic city centre, market town and charming villages.  Our refurbished offices are in the city centre near to the Thameslink station (London St Pancras 20 minutes and Luton Parkway 11 minutes), shops and restaurants. In short it is a great place to live and work.

As a Planner working at one of the busiest Planning Authorities in the country, with plans to redevelop the city centre, it’s an exciting time to join us. We have a variety of interesting planning challenges, including several conservation areas across the District. If you have the potential, we can offer you the opportunities to develop your career and make decisions that affect how people live in a positive way.

You will provide professional advice and guidance on all aspects of our service to users to meet statutory and service requirements. You will also lead on the consideration and negotiation of planning applications and provide a decision recommendation on each application within statutory time limits.

Ideally, you will be a member of the RTPI, or be working towards being so, and hold a Town Planning qualification. Working knowledge of the development management process and how these can be applied in practise would be an advantage.

An excellent communicator, you will have an aptitude for using development management software.  A commitment to excellent customer services, a flexible approach to work and the ability to work to very strict deadlines are essential qualities for this post.

We offer a competitive package which also includes learning and development opportunities, essential user car allowance, flexitime or flexible working options (e.g. nine-day fortnight, compressed hours, partial homeworking), up to 26 days annual leave, reimbursement of professional fees, pension scheme and leisure and travel discounts.

This post is subject to a Basic Disclosure Check.

For an informal discussion about the role please contact Linda Middleton, Transformation Manager on (01727) 819401.

Closing date: 17 January 2019

Interviews are scheduled for:  25 January 2019

Make St Albans work for you!

Improve your lifestyle, enjoy more quality time and
a better Work Life Balance

Working at the Council can be very rewarding. Our services affect the daily lives of people in our community in many different ways, and our staff feel like they’re making a difference to people’s lives, whilst working in a positive and flexible environment.

We can offer you the opportunity to try something new or take your career to the next level. We are looking for talented, enthusiastic people who want to take on a job and really make it their own. You can gain a wide range of knowledge, skills and experience with us and develop to your full potential.

Many people still face the challenges  of balancing work and home life. For many of our employees today—both male and female—their daily lives involve a host of family and other personal responsibilities and interests.

The Council recognises the importance of finding this balance and offers a range of different programs and initiatives, such as flexi-time flexible working arrangements in the form of part-time, job-share, compressed hours, full and partial home working. These are available across a range of roles from administrative level to senior specialist roles.
We also have a casual register of people looking to work flexibly and when needed to provide support at peak times during the year.

This includes covering local elections, supporting key events held within the district and covering holidays and other absences.

We also offer a range of benefits including childcare voucher scheme, train season ticket loan/discount, health initiatives and a leisure discount scheme. And these are just some of the many benefits you’ll receive when you join us.
