The Canal & River Trust is one of the UK’s largest and newest charities, having been set up in 2012 to care for over 2,000 miles of historic inland waterways. Now, less than a decade later, we are embarking on the next stage of our journey, as we adopt a new regional structure that will enable us to serve customers and stakeholders more effectively and help make us the charity for wellbeing and waterways. We believe life is better by water. Join us, at this exciting time, and you can help make that vision a reality.

About the role

We now have ambitious plans for six new regions across England and Wales – including the East Midlands, which is where you come in. You'll support the region’s activities by developing fundable projects in collaboration with colleagues, and by identifying and delivering sustainable funding sources to meet regional strategic objectives. This will involve representing and promoting the Trust’s work to a wide range of external stakeholders, as well as developing and managing relationships with statutory, charitable and corporate funders and partners.

The resources you generate will make a significant difference to health and wellbeing across the region, whether they’re being used to improve visitor destinations or waterway infrastructure or to provide people in local communities with opportunities to learn, participate and engage.

About you

We’re looking for someone who combines extensive knowledge of planning, heritage, environment and regeneration issues with a proven track record of developing and writing successful funding bids. You’ll be developing projects from concept to delivery, so it’s important that you can think creatively and innovatively while at the same time having the ability to manage budgets and financial risk. You also need to be great with people, whether you’re working in a team, building relationships with partners, presenting to key stakeholders, or using your influencing and negotiation skills.

About us

We’re the charity who look after and bring to life 2,000 miles of canals and rivers. Our waterways contribute to the health and wellbeing of local communities and economies, creating attractive and connected places to live, work, volunteer and spend leisure time. These historic, natural and cultural assets form part of the strategic and local green-blue infrastructure network, linking urban and rural communities as well as habitats. Our waterways are on the doorstep of 8 million people and reach some of the most deprived communities within the UK. By caring for our waterways and promoting their use we believe we can improve the wellbeing of our nation. Come and be part of it.

To apply

We aim to represent the diverse communities we are part of and welcome applicants from across all sectors of the community. We strongly believe that a diverse workforce brings with it a diversity of ideas, thinking and ways of working which enhances what we do. Many of our vacancies can be considered for people who wish to work flexibly, job share or part time.
