  • Description
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for an Ocean Modeller (Shelf Seas) to join our Polar Oceans/Shelf Seas Team. The successful candidate will be developing, running and evaluating a range of idealised models of the Antarctic continental shelves. They will evaluate the formation and structure of the Antarctic Slope Front, its role in setting shelf water properties and ice shelf melt rates. The successful candidate will evaluate the model's ability to explain observations, and interpret the implications for ocean melting of the Antarctic Ice Sheet. This role is part of a pan-European project involving oceanographers and glaciologists in a study of tipping points in the Antarctic climate system.
To be successful in this role, you must have experience in the use of numerical models of ocean circulation, and of coding in Fortan/Python/Matlab on Linux and PC-based systems.
    Purpose
To develop, test and run a range of idealised models the Antarctic continental shelves to evaluate the formation and structure of the Antarctic Slope Front its role in setting shelf water properties and ice shelf melt rates.
    Qualification
First degree in physical science/mathematics plus PhD (or equivalent experience).
    Duties
# Develop an idealised model of the Antarctic continental shelf in a zonally-constant, periodic domain.

# Investigate the role of surface wind and buoyancy forcing in setting the strength of the slope front and the resulting shelf water properties.

# Evaluate the current structure associated with the front, especially the strength and location of any undercurrent.

# Investigate the impact of zonally-varying topography.

# Invesitgate the impact of ice shelf meltwater.

# Explore the reponse to time-varying forcing

# Quantify thresholds for transition between warm and cold continental shelf regimes.

# Attend project meetings to report on progress and share results.

# Present model developments and scientific results in the peer-reviewed literature and at conferences.

On-line application forms and further information are available on our website at www.bas.ac.uk/vacancies.

These are also available from the Human Resources Section, British Antarctic Survey, High Cross, Madingley Road, Cambridge, CB3 0ET. Tel: (01223) 221508.
