Returner Programmes

Our Anglia Route Asset Protection (ASPRO) department work on projects requested and funded by external clients who wish to construct something over, under or near the railway, and which will affect the railway in some way. We are introducing a six months "returners" programme beginning in September for four "Scheme Interface Managers" (APSIM's).

You may never have considered a career on the railway before - we aren't an employer purely for engineers. We have opportunities in almost every career path where we can offer you long-term career prospects with flexible working that will suit you and your family.

What does this mean?

You'll be the “ambassador” of NWR to our external partners, and as such, have a responsibility in balancing client expectations and safeguarding the railway from any ill effects. In essence you will are project managing our customers.

We don't expect you to have an engineering background or to be a "finished" project manger. We are looking for your ability to:

  • co-ordinate and facilitate people
  • Organise people
  • Influence and communicate with people
  • challenge people when needed

These are skills that you naturally obtain from having a family and running a household. Even if you feel you do not tick every box, we want to hear from you. The key for this opportunity is your transferable skills and how you can apply them.

Julie Houghton, the scheme leader, went through this journey and has never looked back. Don't be afraid to try something new and build a new career path and pursue fresh challenges. We will ensure you are fully supported across the three days that you work. Salary will be £39,514 pro rata across 3 days.

Our returners programme won't always be easy but you will be presented with the opportunities to grow your own skills and influence our improvement and project plans for the benefit of thousands. You can be proud knowing you will make a difference every single day.
