The Treasury is the United Kingdom’s economics and finance ministry. It is responsible for formulating and implementing the government’s financial and economic policy. Its aim is to raise the rate of sustainable growth, and achieve rising prosperity and a better quality of life with economic and employment opportunities for all.

The Strategic Projects team is a lively, friendly, and creative team that sits within the Strategy, Planning and Budget department. We are looking for a number of strategy and policy advisers to join the team and lead on projects covering some of the most important policy challenges facing both HM Treasury and Government. The post gives an excellent insight into a variety of the Treasury’s business areas, as well as encouraging development of core policy, analysis and project management skills through working on high-profile issues. Each project typically lasts from 3-6 months, so there is an opportunity to work in many different areas during your time in the team. Recent projects have included developing a long-term strategy for the implications of the shift towards electric vehicles; implementing the recommendations from the Rose review into female entrepreneurship; and organising and delivering high-profile G20 meetings hosted by the UK.

The responsibilities within the role include scoping out and planning new projects, ensuring to prioritise work streams with the greatest impact; developing robust policy solutions; effectively communicating outcomes to Senior Officials, Ministers and other stakeholders; promoting innovation and creativity in the Treasury’s approach to policy making; and playing an active role in the team’s  wider activities. Our ideal candidate will have experience of quickly picking up new content to creatively implement robust and structured solutions to complex issues; will be able to structure, plan, and prioritise a busy workload while delivering consistently high-quality work; and will be able to work collaboratively to deliver results by building, maintaining and influencing stakeholder networks.

The Strategic Projects team takes pride in open, collaborative management which supports personal development. You will have a permanent SPB line manager who will focus on your development and pastoral care. During projects, you will be matrix-managed in your day-to-day work by a manager from within your project team. The team has well-developed systems for ensuring excellence in matrix management, including high-quality performance feedback. Individuals appointed to the Treasury will be subject to National Security Vetting. To allow for meaningful checks to be carried out applicants will normally need to have lived in the UK for at least 3 years out of the past 5 years. A lack of UK residency in itself is not necessarily a bar to security clearance but the Department will need to consider on a case by case basis using all information that can be obtained following a successful application.
