We are looking for a creative and talented Press Officer to join our press office at the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and become part of our high performing team. 

At the MCA, our Press Officers are responsible for maintaining and developing external relations, promoting key priorities and safety messages and protecting the Agency’s reputation using a variety of different platforms. 

The successful candidate will become involved in our creative media plans, handle media and lead in a way that maximises positive coverage. Our Press Officers are at the frontline of Maritime and Coastguard communications and this is an exciting time to join the team as we move in new directions under the leadership of a new CEO. 

Key responsibilities 

• Maintaining and developing good media relations with journalists across the UK from a broad range of publications, broadcasters and trade press, local, regional and national. 

• Handling incoming media enquiries effectively and professionally, responding with either phone calls or emailed statements in a timely manner. 

• Identifying the need for proactive media handling plans and creating these plans, liaising with key stakeholders as well as press and marketing colleagues in an holistic approach. 

• Developing and delivering key lines to take and disseminating them to media contacts. 

• Briefing Senior Leadership Team, Department for Transport as required on major incidents and matters of policy. 

• Creating press releases and social media content in accordance with our style guidelines, covering proactive and reactive, incidents and policy as well as corporate announcements. 

• Identifying proactive opportunities and creating press releases, articles and features as required. 

• Working as an integral part of the wider communications team, providing media support for campaigns. 

• Advising MCA colleagues on media handling - briefing for interviews, providing 1-2-1 practice where necessary, shadowing them at media events to advise. 

• Effectively evaluating media and social media activity, providing reports and figures where asked on social media following, engagement. 

• Contributing to social media project ideas based on key policies and messages across the MCA, working with press and wider Communications team. 

About you 

We are looking for someone who is a natural communicator. You will have a real passion for building fantastic and engaging content. You may already have a background in PR or Journalism and have the ability to produce outstanding work. You are able to tell a story and react quickly to new information. First-class writing skills are paramount to this job and the ability to turn around press releases and responses to tight deadlines. 

You would be described as a diligent person, happy to concentrate on your work and do a thorough job even when under pressure. You are ready to react quickly and will be a focused and calm person who can get the job done regardless of the environment you are in. We would encourage those with excellent judgement and a strong understanding of social media and the importance of engaging digital content.

Further information

The role involves short notice deployments and also occasionally working very long hours during incidents. There is some UK travel involved.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is an executive agency of the United Kingdom working to prevent the loss of lives at sea and is responsible for implementing British and international maritime law and safety policy. It is also responsible for land based search and rescue helicopter operations from 2015.

Its responsibilities include coordinating search and rescue (SAR) on the coastline and at sea through His Majesty's Coastguard (HMCG), ensuring that ships meet international and UK safety standards, monitoring and preventing coastal water pollution and testing and issuing Merchant Navy Certificates of Competency (licences) for ships' officers and crew to STCW requirements The organisation is led by Virginia McVea, its Chief Executive, who took up post in February 2023.The MCA are chiefly responsible for the syllabus and national training standards issued by the Merchant Navy Training Board (based at the UK Chamber of Shipping).
