The UKHO develops and serves world leading geospatial software and data solutions to commercial shipping companies, navies and maritime organisations. Our products ensure safe navigation and global trade efficiency and support other marine activities including economic development, environmental protection, resource exploration and utilisation, scientific research and security and defence.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Software Engineer to join our data platform team. Depending on your experience and skill set, you will join as either a Senior of Expert level.

Working as part of an agile team, the successful applicant will work on developing our data management and processing services.  Activities include:

  • Writing code in Java, Scala, Typescript;
  • Automating testing and deployments to the cloud;
  • Using SaaS and PaaS components from multiple cloud providers (e.g. AWS and Azure), and cloud-based build and deployment tooling (GitHub, Azure Pipelines, Azure Kubernetes Service, Terraform etc.);
  • Using big data techniques to store and process data;
  • Using a variety of architectural paradigms such as containers and serverless.

We emphasise quality and have high standards for design, test automation and continuous delivery.

For our Senior Software Engineer role, we are looking for candidates who have a good understanding of Java or a similar language and have proven experience as a software developer.

For our Expert Software Engineer position, the applicant will be an expert in one or more core technologies with a strong track record as a developer in a number of technical contexts. The applicant will have spent time investigating new tools and techniques and mentoring others.
