The RSPB is looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic person to join their team at the Pagham Harbour and Medmerry nature reserves. These internationally important nature reserves are situated side by side on the South Coast and are at very different stages of development.
Bird Aware Visitor Experience Officer
Location: Sidlesham
Salary starting at: £17,276 to £18,716
Hours: Full Time
Contract: Permanent
We are looking to appoint a full time Bird Aware Visitor Experience Officer, focused on reducing disturbance to breeding and over-wintering birds across the two nature reserves. Based at the small office and visitor centre at Sidlesham, the successful candidate will be working with visitors, partner organisations and the wider community on disturbance mitigation projects. They will initiate their own events and projects, monitor their success and report back to the Site Manager / SPA Mitigation Strategy Steering Group.
They will undertake regular patrols across both reserves, in all seasons; they will have a good working knowledge of shore-bird species and their conservation requirements; and they will be an excellent communicator. They will also be involved in the recruitment and training of a part-time Assistant Bird Aware Visitor Experience Officer in the autumn/winter of 2019, who will assist in the delivery of this project.
Both positions are jointly funded by Adur District Council and Chichester District Council as part of The Pagham Harbour SPA Recreation Mitigation Strategy (Pagham Harbour & Medmerry Bird Aware). The strategy aims to mitigate the impact of housing development on the Pagham Harbour SPA and Medmerry proposed SPA through a combination of actions and activities. The successful candidate will be expected to forge close links with Arun and Chichester District Council Foreshore Officers, the staff employed by the Solent Bird Aware scheme (a wider scheme covering the Solent from West Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight), and staff employed by the Chichester Harbour Conservancy.
This role is covered by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. You will be asked to declare unspent convictions and cautions at offer of employment stage.
Closing date: 29 July 2019
Interview date: 9 August 2019
