Are you an experienced IT Support person with good knowledge of different ICT Systems? 

Do you have small network management experience? 

Would you enjoy the variety of providing front-line support to IT Users but also the management of a complex network? 

If so, we have an opportunity for an IT Manager to join our team at the Marine Accident Investigation Branch. 

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is an independent unit within the Department for Transport (DfT) with responsibility for investigating accidents involving UK-registered vessels anywhere in the world, and any vessel in UK territorial waters (12 mile limit). The MAIB is based in Southampton and has 36 members of staff. 

You will have the chance to focus on the day-to-day management and support of the systems and platforms. You will also be involved in keeping up to date with developments in technologies, to enable this small branch to maintain currency and keep up with the challenges that staff may encounter in the course of their investigations 

Role Responsibilities 

As part of your role, you will be responsible for: 

• Developing and managing MAIB’s IT equipment and its supporting infrastructure 
• Managing the Branch’s local accredited network 
• Managing the servers, storage and network, including UPS support and critical data back-up 
• Developing and managing the network security 
• Set-up and problem-solving associated peripherals including laptops, PCs, printers, mobile and desk phones 
• Advising on replacement and upgrade of existing equipment 
• First line support for the MAIB’s use of the DfT’s ETHOS network and telephone systems 
• Accounting and support of technical equipment issued to staff, including laptops and PCs, mobile phones, digital recorders and cameras 
• Contributing to the management and continued development of the branch’s databases 
• Administration responsibility for the branch’s Microsoft suite of tools and platforms

We are looking for someone with a high level of knowledge in a wide range of IT topics. We will look to you to provide the focal point for staff as first line support. You have in-depth experience of Office products. You can also successfully manage service delivery of ICT services and working with teams from IT service operations. 

We are looking for a fantastic communicator who can convey complicated information in an accessible and easy to understand format. We would love to attract someone who has exceptional communication skills. You are passionate about working collaboratively with others and can express yourself in a confident and concise manner.
