The role

The UK Hydrographic Office, based in award-winning offices in Taunton, Somerset, is seeking two team members to join the Tactical Products team and contribute to KPM1 through the updating/compilation/preparation of Situational Awareness Products for our Defence Customer as agreed in the annual Service Definition Annex (SDA) within the Defence Hydrographic Programme.

Key tasks will include:

  • Production and maintenance of Additional Military Layers (AML) cells.
  • Compilation of Beach reports, HPAs and responding to RFIs and other adhoc requests.
  • Production and maintenance of the Defence Marine Environmental Product suite.
  • Production and maintenance of Electronic MW Pilots.

The UK Hydrographic Office is a leading centre for hydrography, providing marine geospatial data to inform maritime decisions. We work with a wide range of data suppliers and partners to support maritime navigation, safety, security and marine development around the UK and worldwide.

The Tactical Products Team is one of several Production Teams within Customer Division that are responsible for the maintenance and production of the UKHO’s extensive range of navigational and situational awareness products and services for the Royal Navy and our commercial customers.  This task encompasses the full spectrum of activity from product updating and delivery to the development of new products, to meet the changing needs of our customers and to ensure safety of life at sea.

Required Technical/Functional Skills and Experience

  • Experience of working in S-57 format
  • Experience of using CARIS toolset
  • Experience of using ESRI and Adobe CS suite software
  • Understanding of the principles of product compilation to IHO standards and cartographic symbology
  • Experience of interpreting marine geospatial data
  • Experience of using S-58 based validation software
