Job description

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) are looking for a highly diligent Business Support Officer within the Ship Standards and Technical Performance Support Team (TST). This is a diverse team that provides support to branches within the Directorate of Maritime Safety and Standards (DMSS). DMSS are concerned with the safety of ships in terms of their navigation or operation, construction and equipment or environmental pollution. 

This rewarding role will allow you to contribute to the maritime strategy for “Safer Ships and Cleaner Seas” by supporting the Agency to fulfil its international and domestic obligations in relation to ship safety, navigational safety and the prevention of environmental pollution from ships.

Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of this role are: 

• Database input & reports 

• Secretariat duties and support for internal & external meetings including minute taking and reports 

• Customer service through dealing with enquiries from internal and external customers 

• Ship survey arrangements 

• Ship inspection and port state control administrative functions 

• Production of statutory certificates and exemptions 

• Website and intranet maintenance tasks 

• Supporting the production of regulatory guidance documents 

• Ad hoc tasks in accordance with the service level agreement in support of TST and Directorate functions

About you 

We would love to attract someone who has exceptional verbal and written communication skills. You will be able to tailor these to suit your audience and can do so clearly and confidently to ensure understanding. 

We are looking for someone who is confident in building and maintaining strong working relationships across the business and wider industry. You will be able to build rapport quickly with internal and external stakeholders, working collaboratively and sharing best practice. 

Excellent organisational skills are required and you will be able to manage and filter workflow as well as organise and prioritise your work to maximise productivity. You will be highly adaptable and flexible, adjusting to the requirements of the role. 

Customer service skills are essential for this role as you will be representing the agency when dealing with internal and external stakeholders. You love to go the extra mile to ensure you give the best service through your passion for delivering great customer service. 

You will have good attention to detail and take pride in producing work to a high standard. Proven IT skills are essential, in particular Microsoft Office software including Word and Excel.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is an executive agency of the United Kingdom working to prevent the loss of lives at sea and is responsible for implementing British and international maritime law and safety policy. It is also responsible for land based search and rescue helicopter operations from 2015.
