Job description

What you will do

You will be responsible for leading the delivery of a medium to highly complex priority project, managing a project team on a day-to-day basis or running a PMO function in a large project or programme. Your Responsibilities will include:

• Being an advocate for the project, getting agreement and support from others when needed.

• Leading performance and keeping delivery on track.

• Building and maintaining delivery teams, motivating them and helping them collaborate and work well together.

• Identifying obstacles to delivery in advance and helping your team to overcome them.

• Focusing the team and your senior leaders on what is most important to successful delivery.

• Encouraging and facilitating performance improvement.

• Coaching and mentoring colleagues to apply the most appropriate project delivery tools and techniques.

• Building links across the department and government, learning from the experiences of similar projects and sharing your own in turn.

• Providing your project delivery advice and insights to colleagues, leaders and management boards.

About you

We are seeking a highly motivated Project Manager, who is looking to develop themselves and their career. We'd like someone who is:

• Experienced in delivering projects within agreed time, cost and quality constraints.

• Flexible when applying your knowledge and capable of adapting tools and techniques to meet different project needs.

• Credible in dealing with a broad range of people, with the confidence to deliver clear and authoritative advice to senior officials.

• Able to constructively challenge and influence, to keep the project on track while maintaining good relationships.

• A committed people manager, able to build capability and develop a high performing and motivated team.

• Able to work highly collaboratively with colleagues.

• Able to take the initiative, and spot opportunities and threats.

• Detailed knowledge and significant experience in project management frameworks and methodologies.

• Demonstrating competence when identifying and amending appropriate project management frameworks and methodologies to enable a consistent and efficient approach to delivery of medium and/or complex projects.

• Able to supervise others in the application of project management frameworks and methodologies and tailor the approach to meet requirements of the project.

It would be an advantage if you have a recognised accreditation in professional project management such as PRINCE2 Practitioner or APM Practitioner Qualification, but this is not essential. You will be supported to achieve such a qualification in post if you don't have one.

This vacancy is using Success Profiles, and will assess your Behaviours, Strengths, Experience and Technical skills.

As part of the application process you will be asked to complete a CV and statement of suitability. Further details around what this will entail are listed on the application form.
Please use your statement of suitability to answer each of the following 3 questions (maximum of 250 words per question)

1. Please give an example of the most complex or important project that you have worked on, and explain how you delivered it within time, cost and quality parameters.

2. Please give an example of a time when you handled a complex range of partners, crossing team and organisational boundaries, and how you gained consensus where views differed.

3. Please give an example of when you have actively handled project risks, including how you considered the organisation’s wider strategy.

In your responses you should briefly introduce the context but focus most of your word allocation to describe the actions you took, with a short conclusion describing the result.

Candidates will be sifted on personal statement.

The interview will consist of behaviour, technical and strength-based questions.

Further information

New entrants are expected to join on the minimum of the pay band.

The successful candidate may be eligible for a £3000 pay enhancement subject to having a valid qualification from the list of ‘typical qualifications’ as defined for the ‘Level Three Project Manager'’ role in the Project Delivery Capability Framework here

If successful and transferring from another Government Department a criminal record check maybe carried out.

A reserve list may be held for up to 12 months from which further appointments can be made.
