Job Details

Barking Riverside is a development of 10,800 homes on the bank of the River Thames in East London.  It has an established community that is growing, meaning that over the course of the next 10 years the population at Barking Riverside will eventually become the size of a small town.  Barking Riverside London is a joint venture between the Mayor of London and L&Q, meaning that the development has a commitment to social impact at its core, and the investment that is being made will deliver a range of transformative amenities including an over ground rail extension, healthcare, schools, new green spaces, public squares, a river connection into central London and up to 65,000 m2 of commercial floor space including shopping, community and leisure facilities. This is one of the largest development projects in the UK, as well as also being one of the largest brownfield development sites in Europe.

Most excitingly, there is an ambition to connect local communities to the River Thames and to design and deliver facilities, services and projects on the river frontage that create a destinational river experience for all of London.

A vitally important aspiration for the development is long-term community stewardship, and so Barking Riverside has plans to transfer all public spaces and buildings into a Community Interest Company (CIC). Regarding the CIC, we are currently at a stage where we are working with local people and stakeholders to undertake a review of the CIC structure and it’s suggested governance. A “Learning Forum” will be created to complete this review and will make recommendations on whether the CIC can be improved for the benefit of the community. We are seeking to appoint someone to independently chair this Learning Forum and CIC review process. This is an innovative way of working that has been designed to give weight and meaning to resident-led decision making, and so this project has received a lot of interest from professional and academic organisations who are keen to learn from this experimental approach.
