About Us

New Hope is a charity that exists to support individuals who are homeless or in vulnerable housing. Providing accommodation as well as group and one-to-one support, we seek to transform and rebuild damaged lives. Founded upon Christian values, we support those of any faith. Our accommodation can sleep up to 66 people every night across three buildings and we are fortunate enough to be able to help over 500 people each year.

We are now looking for three Waking Night Support Workers to join our team on a part time basis for a four month contract (plus training period) and cover shifts throughout the week (see below for details).

Your Role

As a Waking Night Support Worker, you will be tasked with the smooth running of Watford Winter Shelter, providing an efficient and effective service and a safe, welcoming environment to users.

Specifically, your role will involve:

- Staying awake throughout the night and being available to support service users and answer queries
- Providing face to face contact with service users
- Maintaining a state of awareness of the wellbeing and welfare of users
- Resolving difficult and potentially confrontational situations to be averted, or quickly resolved
- Assisting in the general running of the Watford Winter Shelter
- Undertaking reception, building security and some cleaning duties
- Updating the Service User Database (SUD) with alerts, incidents and contacts
- Dealing with accommodation enquiries over the phone
- Taking referrals and allocating vacancies

About You

Interested? Although no experience is required, to be considered as a Waking Night Support Worker, you will need:

- To be self-aware, compassionate and non-judgemental
- High levels of motivation, great communication skills and an organised approach
- To be willing to learn and able to stay awake all night
- The ability to respond flexibly, confidently and professionally to any challenges that may arise
- To be happy working alongside volunteers and able to take the lead
- To be able to keep good records and ensure that information is passed on through our in-house database or through email

Experience gained within the homelessness sector would be beneficial to your application. A track record of working with clients with drug, alcohol and mental health issues would also be an advantage, as would experience of working in partnership with other agencies and individuals.

Experience of working in a service user led environment would be equally desirable.

Other organisations may call this role Night Support Worker, Homelessness Worker, Care Worker, Social Care Worker, Social Care Assistant, Outreach Worker, Homelessness Support Worker, or Accommodation Support Worker.

These are part time roles, working 28 hours per week across various shifts:

- Sundays and Mondays plus every third Saturday
- Tuesdays and Wednesdays plus every third Saturday
- Thursdays and Fridays plus every third Saturday
