About us

We’re CAN and we’re all about supporting public sector organisations in the UK to raise revenue by enabling them to sell advertising in a safe and ethical way.

We’ve spent five successful years achieving this via our digital Council Advertising Network – which delivers advertising on more than 50 local council websites and 100-plus other public sector websites across England and Wales.

And we’re now expanding so we can support local councils to optimise their advertising income through selling print advertising (and sponsorship opportunities if they arise) to their local business community using our CAN Sponsorship and Advertising Sales service.

About the job

CAN is on the lookout for sales professionals who have experience selling media in their own area (perhaps with the local newspaper or radio station) to encourage local businesses to buy advertising space in council publications and on council websites.

Many businesses don’t realise how much of an important player their council is in the local media. A council’s bimonthly or quarterly print publication is delivered to every household in the area it covers and is a trusted way for residents and businesses to keep in touch with what is happening in their community.

Meanwhile, the council website provides information and online access across a whole range of services from education to social care, and waste to building planning. The subtle advertising CAN runs on council webpages doesn’t detract from this important information but is well-placed to generate maximum response from a local audience.

We need talented and personable salespeople who feel confident to deliver the message that council websites and publications are unrivalled locally for reach and distribution. You’ll help boost your local public services, economy and community at the same time.

In this role, you will start with the responsibility for selling advertising space for one council local to where you’re based. There would then be the opportunity to expand, selling on behalf of neighbouring councils. The amount of work you take on over and above the first council is entirely dependent on your availability. But the opportunity is there to work with several nearby councils and achieve OTE upwards of £60,000 a year – but still on a part-time basis; this isn’t a pro-rata estimate.

Your job will involve selling to SMEs and other mid-sized local organisations in the commercial and public sectors, self-generating leads based on contacts supplied by the councils. Much of the work will be over the phone and via email (with the possibility of some face-to-face meetings as required).

You will have great support from CAN’s small, friendly team – who all work remotely from home themselves – who will provide you with templates for introductory emails and media packs.

About you

Ideally, you will have:

  • A proven track record in local advertising sales, both telephone and face-to-face.
  • Experience generating new business through cold-calling and emails, identifying and developing sales opportunities and seeing them through to closure.
  • The skills to build long-standing relationships with clients to secure repeat business.
  • The ability to work from home and conduct face-to-face meetings when needed.
  • An organised, customer-focused approach with the self-discipline to make enough contacts to achieve your sales targets within set deadlines.
  • A good IT set-up at home, with broadband.
  • A positive, confident but personable approach.

Interested?

This isn’t a role for immediate start. It’s likely you would be engaged with us from early next year as we are currently signing up councils to our expanded service. A number of Media Sales Executive roles are likely to be available with us across England and Wales.

It’s a role offered on a self-employed contractor basis – so there is no holiday or sick pay or pension. But there is a £12,000 basic salary for part-time work from home upwards of 10 hours a week, and there is the potential to earn very generous bonuses, depending on how many hours you can work.
