We have an excellent opportunity for a dedicated individual to work within our fast-paced team here at the MCA as the Counter Pollution and Salvage Officer (Scotland and Northern Ireland) to provide a timely and effective response to marine pollution and salvage incidents within the UK's Exclusive Economic Zone. This is a fantastic opportunity to promote and enforce safety awareness while supporting and maintaining strong working relationships with stakeholders across UK and Europe.

The Counter Pollution and Salvage branch of the MCA has specific responsibility for counter pollution preparedness and response at sea and the management of the UK Government's stockpiles of equipment and dispersant. In every incident the Counter Pollution and Salvage Officer is normally the first point of contact via a Coastguard Operations Centre or National Maritime Operations Centre.

You will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of marine vessel operations.

As part of the role your responsibilities will include:

• Assist Counter Pollution & response Branch to develop and implement standards nationally on behalf of MCA

• Respond to day to day maritime incidents, potential and actual oil pollution incidents

• Be present on scene where circumstances dictate, to protect UK interests from threat of spilled oil and other hazardous noxious substances

• Assist in the development of hazardous and noxious substances response plans and conduct audits with Ports and Harbours and oil handling facilities to ensure regulations and current legislation compliance is adhered to, initiating enforcement measures when required

• Responsible for being the agency point of contact, liaison and support for the oil industry and other stakeholders

• Perform on-call function as part of HQ duty support team, responding to marine pollution incidents one week in five, providing operational and technical support

• Assist local authorities in the development of their on shore pollution contingency plans, training and exercises

• Co-ordinate emergency response situations, minimising maritime impact

It is also responsible for land based search and rescue helicopter operations from 2015.
