The Maritime & Coastguard Agency has started an ambitious IT transformation programme that will deliver improved capability across an expanded IT workforce. We aim to improve all technology services whilst supporting the wider business on its own transformation requirements and ensuring IT aligns to their needs.
We have an exciting opportunity for a Lead Service Designer to lead the MCA’s Service Design team. The Design team will design the end-to-end journey of a service that both helps a user complete their goal and also delivers a policy intent. This service may involve the creation of or change to transactions, products and content, and would apply to both digital and offline channels provided by different parts of government. This role will lead and influence the Service Design team. Work with Service Managers and Programme Directors to develop design concepts. This role will set direction, assure the quality of design delivery across teams and can lead multiple or highly complex services.
You will receive support from the Chief Technology Officer and have the chance to create positive working relationships across the whole of MCA.
Roles Responsibilities include but not limited to:
• Design and implementation the MCA Service design function along with associated strategy, policies and processes.
• Work with the team, Service Managers and stakeholders to capture the entire perspective of the service area, set the vision and build a road map for the future.
• Understand the existing supporting system of a service area and work with teams to target service improvements.
• Work with specialists to design effective structures that support the delivery of current and new services.
• Identify shared activities across services to drive efficiency.
• Lead discussions at a senior level and successfully negotiate policy changes to accommodate new services.
Based at MCA Headquarters in Southampton the role holder will be expected to participate in ongoing continuous professional development and this may require spending time away from home and the workplace.
Are you an expert practitioner who influences and mentors others? You will need to have experience in leading a team of designers who have designed the end-to-end journey of a service. Previous experience of negotiating policy changes to accommodate new services. You have experience in designing and development of digital services and solutions. You would have used a verity of methods and tools for Service Design. You will be flexible, with the ability to travel between our various sites.

This vacancy is using Success Profiles, and will assess your Behaviours, Strengths, Experience and Technical skills.
The sift is due to take place Week Commencing 25th November.
There will be a two-stage interview process for this role, there will be a leadership assessment and a separate interview.
Interviews and assessments are likely to be started Week Commencing 9th December.
Interviews will likely be held in Southampton.
