What is the purpose of this role?

As a pivotal member of our Highways Design delivery team, we are looking for a Principal Civil Engineer to lead a team of circa 10 engineers and technicians to deliver a broad range of mutli-disciplinary civil engineering design projects both nationally and potentially internationally.

You will act proactively and robustly to lead your team to deliver designs as per project requirements ensuring client and business requirements are met. You will lead by example in the delivery, management and financial control of the projects to ensure robust and effective delivery across your portfolio. Additionally, you will support the Highways Team Discipline Lead and Account Manager to drive change and innovation within projects and on the Account.

As Principal Civil Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

  • Reporting to the Highways Discipline Lead / Project Director
  • You will be responsible for robust design delivery to relevant technical standards
  • You will lead the delivery of project outcomes on time, within budget and to a high-quality standard
  • You will coach staff, using your experienced technical skillset to grow and challenge the future generation supporting them in their professional development and training
  • You will ensure team targets are met and proactively implement measures to improve performance, efficiency and utilisation
  • You will proactively build sustainable client relationships and identify new business opportunities to enhance the Account business opportunities

What are we looking for in a Principal Civil Engineer?

  • A degree in Civil Engineering
  • A chartered Engineer (CEng/IEng + MICE) / CIHT / IHE
  • Thorough / expert knowledge and understanding of the DMRB / Local Authority Standards
  • Evidence of leading/managing a variety of Highway Design Projects
  • Effective and proven team motivational skills
  • Good IT Skills with a sound knowledge of engineering software
  • Proven communication skills with the ability to build and develop relationships with a variety of stakeholders
  • 8+ years' experience of the co-ordination of the design process and team management
  • Client focused approach to service delivery
  • Proven ability of managing projects and delivering on time and within budget
  • Commercial and financial awareness
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and workload
  • Ability to work under pressure and deliver a high-quality product
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of key design software (CAD/3d/MX/Open roads)
  • Thorough knowledge of CDM and health and safety requirements / implications of design
  • As a Principal Civil Engineer, we expect Health & Safety to be a key focus for you
  • Hold a driving license
