Job description

The Maritime & Coastguard Agency has started an ambitious IT transformation programme that will deliver improved capability across an expanded IT workforce. We aim to improve all technology services whilst supporting the wider business on its own transformation requirements and ensuring IT aligns to their needs.

We are looking for a Head of Data Engineering to join our MCA management team located in Southampton. You will lead a multi-functional delivery team in producing robust data services for a variety of government departments and private sector partners. You will assist in building the data engineering capability across MCA by providing technical leadership and career development for the community.

This role provides you with an opportunity to take up a key leadership role within IT at the MCA, helping to shape and create an environment that makes a real difference for the UK public.
 

Responsibilities

Roles Responsibilities include and not limited to:

• Designing, architecting and building data flow solutions.
• Recognise and share opportunities to reuse existing data flows between teams.
• Building data stream systems applying knowledge of systems integration.
• Champion data engineering across MCA.
• Providing technical leadership across data projects and programmes.
• Identifying and addressing user needs and building relationships across MCA.
• Contributing to an agile, fast paced organisation by promoting innovation.
• Providing leadership and inspiration to promote the benefits of change.

You will operate to a normal weekday working pattern consisting of a 7.4 hour working day and over the course of a year you will work 1931 net conditioned hours. You will sometimes be required to occasionally work outside of normal conditioned hours, and to work/travel on official duty within the UK and short-term visits overseas.

About you

Do you have experience in delivering successful and high-value data engineering initiatives? You will need to be confident in using an agile approach. Experience in delivering data engineering projects working through complex business problems. Proven knowledge and experience in data engineering and an understanding of software architecture and development. You will have strong knowledge of technical design, implementation and security. Proven ability in identifying and addressing user needs and building relationships across organisations. Do you have experience of a broad range of data management processes and technologies, both traditional and big data?

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles, and will assess your Behaviours, Experience and Technical skills.

The sift is due to take place Week Commencing 27th January.

Interviews/assessments are likely to be held Week Commencing 17th February.

Interviews will likely be held in Southampton.

We will try to meet the dates set out in the advert. There may be occasions when these dates will change. You will be provided with sufficient notice of the confirmed dates.

If successful and transferring from another Government Department a security check may be carried out.

A reserve list will be held for a period of 12 months from which further appointments can be made.

New entrants are expected to join on the minimum of the pay band.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is an executive agency of the United Kingdom working to prevent the loss of lives at sea and is responsible for implementing British and international maritime law and safety policy. It is also responsible for land based search and rescue helicopter operations from 2015.
