The purpose of this role?

A member of the AmeySRM M6 Junction 19 project team, reporting to the Sector Engineer, you will be responsible for the coordination and management of the sub-contractors employed on the respective area of works.

The role requires a high level of interface between Architects, Civil and Structural Engineers, Construction Workers, Sub-contractors, Client or Employer's Agent Clerk of Works.

You will be expected to provide specific technical knowledge and expertise to ensure quality construction techniques are maintained.

What will this role involve

  • Assist with the project team with the management of the sub-contractors to ensure that they are working to their sub-contract
  • Ensure that all sub-contractors are working to the latest design information and provide technical advice and direction when required
  • Carry out checks of onsite works to ensure they reflect the drawings and specifications
  • Establish good relationships with sub-contractors to ensure they meet their obligations
  • Carry out quality management in accordance with approved procedures including method statements, quality plans and inspection and test plans
  • Read and understand all relevant drawings and specifications relating to the area of works and seek advice when necessary
  • Liaise with the project planner regarding construction programmes
  • Checking materials and work in progress for compliance with specifications
  • Resolving technical issues with employer's representatives, suppliers, subcontractors and statutory authorities
  • Assist in the procurement process to ensure that scopes of works comprehensively define the technical requirements of the sub-contract package
  • Measurement and valuation (in accordance with the project commercial staff where appropriate)
  • Provide data in respect of variation orders and site instructions when required
  • Preparing record drawings, technical reports, site diary
  • Supervising and mentoring junior or trainee Engineers
  • Ensure quality construction standards and the use of the correct construction techniques are maintained in order to provide a defect free end product
  • Ensure that health and safety and environmental legislation are adhered to
  • Attend the daily activity brief meetings and weekly sub-contractor coordination meetings
  • Prepare, record and update site progress reports
  • Take ownership for the health and safety of the areas of which are under their control including full sub-contractor risk assessment method statement's sign off
  • To liaise with all levels of staff within the Project, Package Engineers, sub-contractors, Package Quantity Surveyors to ensure the effective delivery of area of work
  • Conduct audits and site surveillances as per the project surveillance programme
  • Advise their line manager and commercial team of any cost/program implications
  • Reviewing and approving sub-contractor design information in accordance with the project specifications and drawings
  • Managing detailed design information flow
  • Assist the package engineers with the management of the detailed scope of works and Inspection and test plans documentation
  • Management of the Project RFI register and dealing with design teams for resolving technical issues
  • Assist the package manager with the production of short term programmes for sub-contractor design and construction works on site
  • Ensure materials are ordered through the buying department as per negotiated rates
  • Carry out setting out duties as directed by Chief Engineer in accordance with the drawings and specifications
  • Assist in the site set up and then maintain site setting out control grid
  • Maintenance of the site survey equipment with periodic testing as directed by the Company Management System


What are we looking for

You will be educated to degree or higher level or equivalent in a numerate discipline, ideally Civil Engineering. A lower educational level, typically HNC or HND may be acceptable where a very significant level of experience in a technical engineering role can be demonstrated. You will also have for example:

  • membership of an appropriate Professional body, typically Institute of Civil Engineering or an international equivalent professional status
  • demonstrable previous relevant experience within construction engineering, including earthworks, ground stabilisation and deep drainage
  • knowledge of the development and implementation of quality management. SMSTS or equivalent Accreditation
  • CSCS Card holder
