Internal Communications Officer - RCN01172

£34,755

(including inner London weighting of £4,227)

At the Royal College of Nursing we're an optimistic organisation. And we've got good reason to be. We all share the same voice when it comes to changing the shape of the health policies of the future. And as the largest trade union of nursing staff and students in the UK - with around 435,000 members - all we can see are the infinite possibilities for a brighter future. Join us and you will too.

We're number 44 in The Sunday Times 100 Best Not for Profit Organisations to work for, with One Star Best Companies Accreditation for 2019 and are accredited with Investors in People Gold Standard.

Internal Communications Officer

Fixed term contract or secondment until 17 August 2020. Office location negotiable. 17.5 hours per week (job share).

There is some flexibility over the hours worked, but we'd be looking for someone to work across Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

As our Internal Communications Officer, you'll use your positive attitude and your internal communication expertise to deliver a programme of activities to engage RCN staff across the UK.

You will get involved in a vast range of internal activities, including writing creative stories to inform and inspire your colleagues, delivering intranet author training and supporting the delivery and success of staff events. We'll look to you to champion the use of our intranet, as well as to support and advise staff in creating engagement plans, support the delivery of our Health and Wellbeing programme, and suggest new ideas to help maintain and increase employee engagement.

This role is a great way to develop your potential as an internal communicator and build your knowledge of our work, all while enabling us to support the UK's vital nursing workforce.

A key part of your role will be to suggest innovative approaches to enhancing the engagement of RCN staff through digital media.

This post has recently become a job share after a longstanding member of our team reduced their hours. As a result, you'll be working alongside a job share partner who already has experience of the team and the organisation that you can learn from.

Your job share partner's working pattern is: Mondays, 9am to 5pm; Tuesdays, 9am to 5pm; Wednesdays, 8.30am to 11am. We'd ideally be looking for someone to complement the other half of this working pattern. Please state your preferred hours in the supporting statement section of your application. You're encouraged to contact the Senior Internal Communications Officer in advance of submitting your application if you'd like to discuss any adjustments to this working pattern.

The existing internal communications team are currently based in the RCN London HQ office and the RCN Cardiff Gate office. Your job share partner will also be based in the London HQ office. You can request to be based in any of our RCN office locations - a full list can be found on the RCN's careers website. Please state your preferred office location in the supporting statement section of your application. Please note that your request is subject to available desk space at your preferred office location.

What we offer you

We expect you to look after your customers. And we expect you to be rewarded for it. As well as a whole range of learning and development opportunities we can also offer you an impressive range of benefits. We have a highly competitive pay structure, as well as flexible working, and annual leave of up to 32 days.

Balancing work and life commitments is important to us. We are a diverse organisation and understand everyone has different needs. All employees can ask for flexible working and when personal circumstances change we will work with you to find a smarter working solution that suits everyone. In fact, many of our employees enjoy home working, flexible working or compressed hours, enabling them to deliver results with minimum impact to their professional and personal commitments. We also offer generous Maternity, Paternity and Adoption leave packages. To join us you'll need experience of writing creatively with purpose and the ability to measure your impact. Some experience of communications planning and project management is also desirable.

Whatever your background, you'll be efficient, accurate and show a real customer focus in all you do.

As this post is a job share, you'll need to have the ability to work flexibly and have exceptional organisation and time management skills.

To succeed at the Royal College of Nursing all you need to do is think bigger, better and brighter. And with an attitude like that, anything's possible.

For more information or for an informal discussion about the role please contact Olivia Hutton, Senior Internal Communications Officer on 020 7647 3548. We love to talk about what we do. Any enquiries will be warmly welcomed.
