Job Details

Location: Taunton, Somerset

Salary: £27,054 increasing to £31,589 on successful completion of training and development programme. An RRA is also applicable to this role, based on specialist skills, knowledge and experience.
Hours: Full time
Contract: Permanent

If you have recent, comprehensive sea going experience in a navigation role, and now want to apply your skills and experience to support the maritime community in a different way, then this could be the role for you.

As a Maritime Advisor based at the UK Hydrographic Office, in our award-winning offices in Taunton, Somerset, you will utilise your experience to provide safe, accurate and timely navigational information for the Mariner.  The UKHO is transforming to meet the changing Maritime environment – in this role, you will have the opportunity to share your external user experience to contribute to and support the development of products and services to meet current and future customer needs.   An eye for detail and the ability to write clear, user focused sailing directions are also key requirements for the role.

About UKHO
The UK Hydrographic Office is a leading centre for hydrography, providing marine geospatial data to inform maritime decisions. We work with a wide range of data suppliers and partners to support maritime navigation, safety, security and marine development around the UK and worldwide.

You will initially join our Operations Division, which is made up of four key areas of activity that collectively provide the stewardship, governance, management, analysis and manipulation of our Marine data assets to support our evolution as a Marine Geospatial Information Agency and enable the provision of products and services to meet the needs of our core SOLAS, Defence and new business markets.

The role
Your primary remit will be to assess new information for its impact on Sailing Directions and subsequently produce safe, accurate, clear, comprehensive, timely and up-to-date volumes of Sailing Directions (SDs) and Section IV Notice to Mariners for the maritime customer. You will also provide navigational and maritime input across the range of existing and emerging UKHO products and services, often sharing your acting Maritime expertise as the “voice of the customer”.

As you learn and develop in the role you will be measured against a defined skills and competency framework and, once the required level is reached, normally within 12 – 18 months, you will become a B2 Maritime Advisor, where you will also be expected to:

  • Act as the subject matter expert for navigational aspects of product usage and Sailing Directions book maintenance and publication.
  • Provide a high level of coaching and mentoring to the staff within the Maritime Advisor Teams, some of whom have limited or no sea going experience.
  • Promote the usage and adherence of quality working procedures and a culture of continuous improvement.=

In return

We will actively empower you to develop yourself and provide flexible working practices for a healthy work/life balance. You will also benefit from a brand new award winning office, with use of our on-site gym, free parking and subsidised canteen.
