Job Details

The role:

Amey's Transport Planners are involved in the development of a wide variety of transportation strategies for road, rail and active travel schemes.

As a Transport Planner for Amey, you will have the opportunity to work on projects from around the UK which will involve traffic modelling, project management and collaboration with design engineers and client liaison (including some site visits). Whilst you may have worked in a more localised and/or specialised area within Transport Planning previously, you will be given the opportunity to develop your skill set across the full Transport Planning remit.

Transport planning is a huge growth area for our business and there will be opportunity at Amey to be part of a small but developing team of transport planners working collaboratively and very effectively across the UK. You will be based at our multi-disciplinary office to the North-East of Sheffield.

Some of the current projects in our team include: development of the business case for Rocket junction reconstruction in Liverpool; Highways Feasibility studies for the Dearne Valley to A1[M] Regeneration Route and the Trans Pennine Tunnel to Humber Ports Route through South Yorkshire; microsimulation modelling of the impact of Traffic Management for the reconstruction of a section of dual carriageway adjacent to the M6 motorway in Cumbria; updating the business case for the M6 J19 improvement scheme; and assisting the HE Area 14 team with the development of a proof of concept App to communicate travel disruption information directly to freight vehicles on the A19.

If you have a background in Transport Planning (as an Assistant Transport Planner) or an associated highways or rail design field with transport planning experience, this could be an opportunity to diversify your schemes of work. In your previous roles you will have likely gained experience with junction assessment software packages such as Arcady, Picady, Linsig Or Transyt; and network Transport Planning software packages such as Saturn, Emme, Cube, Visum, Vissim, Paramics, Legion or Tuba.

You will be expected to be working towards a relevant professional qualification, such as the Transport Planning Professional Qualification. Our mentors will support you as you work towards this.

Whilst this would ideally be a full time role, we are open to and can accommodate part time and job share options.

In a typical week you may:

  • Develop, run and document your work on a variety of traffic and pedestrian models including 'Saturn' and 'Vissim' (We provide expert support to help you develop your modelling skills.);
  • Run traffic economic models to calculate the benefits of road, rail and pedestrian schemes;
  • Manage small scale projects such as modelling the impacts of proposed trunk road lane closures for maintenance purposes, and undertake liaison with stakeholders;
  • Support senior and principal transport planners in the development of a wide range of road, rail, walking and cycling schemes including the application of business cases, feasibility and preliminary design;
  • Help, support and supervise graduate transport planners;
  • Work closely with and provide transport planning advice to scheme design engineers.

To be successful you will:

  • Be able to demonstrate developing experience and expertise within the relevant technical field, probably gained in an Assistant Transport Planner role or equivalent
  • Be able to produce or oversee the production of technically sound transport planning solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working under supervision
  • Have experience in undertaking project related tasks associated with health, safety and welfare, e.g. Construction (Design and Management) Regulations
  • Be able to demonstrate an understanding of technical governance procedures within a consulting engineering environment
  • Bachelors or Masters degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate subject
  • An agreed programme of actions towards successful achievement of either Transport Planning Professional (TPP) status, Chartered Engineer status or Incorporated Engineer status
