Position Summary

The Technical Manager is responsible for the efficient and effective management of operational resources involved in a production within the London Technology Hub.  The facility comprises of Production and Sound Control Rooms, Commentary booths and Multi-Function Rooms. 

 

The Technical Manager is the principal on site contact for production partners and crew during productions, working as part of an organisation delivering services to the international business, ensuring the facility operates to the highest standards.

 

A key focus of this role is to provide support and guidance to our production partners by understanding fully their production requirements and interpreting those needs and ideas to form robust technical solutions to successfully deliver live events.

 

This role is shift based to ensure technical management cover of productions and may include, from time to time, the requirement to work on location internationally.

Responsibilities

  • Working in partnership with clients to interpret production requirements and ideas and developing these into technical plans
  • Effective communication of the plan to those involved in delivery by creating technical schematic explainers and associated documentation as required
  • Work in partnership with the bookings team and facility management team to ensure efficient utilisation of all technical and human resources
  • Identify and manage requirements of hired equipment and/or freelance resource including balancing budget constraints of both engineering and operations
  • Lead the crew and be the key point of contact for the production on the programme day
  • Central point of contact for engineering in terms of production requirements
  • Oversee configuration and setup of all broadcast and corporate systems as necessary
  • Efficient management of equipment failure to ensure minimal disruption to transmissions
  • Actively monitor and seek feedback on performance of the facility and services and promote improvements in customer service
  • Contribute to the development of training plans to deliver staff and freelancer training requirements as necessary
  • Develop in-house talent through the provision of comprehensive technical training
  • Accountable and responsible for technical standards of output
  • Lead, direct and motivate a designated group of staff and provide feedback on performance to individuals and senior management as necessary
  • Provide Tech Manager daily report for each production
  • Actively lead and ensure compliance with all Health and Safety policies
  • Management of safety including creation of risk assessments, method statement and accident investigation as necessary
  • Work collaboratively with other GT&O organisations i.e. MAM, Ingest, Engineering, MCR, Programming, OAP, Preview Team and Transmission ensuring working relationships and communication are of the highest standards
  • Facilitate EMEA production resource sharing via ETT architecture
  • Contribute to booking of external facilities necessitated by resiliency factors or capacity shortages
  • Identify key development opportunities for improved workflows, system development and enhanced reporting. Driving forward the system and software development needs for the facility with Engineering team, overseeing testing, implementation, and relevant training.
  • On behalf of Production Operations lead projects and initiatives with focus on successful delivery of projects on time and in budget
  • Manage workflow and system changes
  • Provide support to the line manager in operational and strategic decision making
  • Identify savings opportunities; promote sharing of best practice and process change opportunities to increase efficiency
  • Other duties as required

Requirements

  • Thorough understanding and extensive knowledge of the sports production process and technical requirements needed to deliver the end product gained from experience within broadcast and the commercial sector
  • Proven ability to successfully form and manage relationships with production partners and clients in an international environment
  • Strong leadership and team management skills and experience demonstrating the ability to motivate, develop and inspire a team
  • Ability to manage and lead within a changing environment
  • Demonstrably assertive and able to handle conflict effectively, calmly and diplomatically
  • A creative and innovative approach to problem solving
  • Self-motivated whilst conforming to best practice guidelines
  • Ability to work within a team environment and with a wide range of personalities and levels of authority
  • Adept at working collaboratively with other service delivery internal departments
  • Pro-active in trouble-shooting, problem solving and avoidance of issues
  • Adaptable and flexible in a challenging, demanding and fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to represent Production Operations at a high level in meetings
  • Take the lead for the department in projects and initiatives, ensuring a considered and effective approach is deployed, projects are delivered on time and to budget and risks and issues highlighted
  • A flexible and strong pro-active approach
  • Strong team player and solid interpersonal skills
