The role:

The Highways Consulting Account is progressive and looking to grow, and we have an opportunity for an Assistant Civil Engineer within our Structures team.

As an Assistant Structures Engineer you will work collaboratively to assist on several technical and supportive tasks for design schemes, ranging from minor highways or built environment schemes up to supporting our major Smart Motorways Programmes. It's likely that you will have completed a graduate scheme or similar (focusing on Highways Structures) and will use this experience to manage your workload efficiently and safely, to include technical report writing, carrying out technical calculations and structural inspections to help support the team.

Our International Design Hub, based in central Birmingham, is home to over 100 Highways and Structures Design specialists. We have a wealth of experience and knowledge which will be actively shared with you as an Assistant Structures Engineer, both in your immediate team of 10 and in the wider Structures team. Our account work with both internal and external clients; from structures design for Staffordshire County Council and the Highways England Area 10,13 and 14 accounts to Wales and Borders - Amey Keolis and the Midlands Highways Alliance (MHA). As such, we can offer you a variety of schemes locally, nationally and internationally to gain experience.

IDH is located across two floors in The Colmore Building right in the heart of Birmingham's Business District, ensuring excellent connections and a wealth of amenities. In a Typical Week you will:

  • Provide support to the Engineer and Senior Engineer within the design team on various design duties including:
    • Surveys/Inspections
    • Feasibility and other technical reports
    • Planning, programming and cost estimation
    • Design production
    • Produce design schedules
    • Amend design drawings
    • Support development of Graduate Engineers and Technicians
  • Work to programme to deliver specified designs on time
  • Ensure innovation and best practice is highlighted and adopted where practicable
  • Drive effective health and safety practices within your Team
  • Be primarily office based but also carry out site visits with other team members



We want to hear from you if you have/are:

  • A Bachelors or Masters degree in an appropriate subject
  • An acceptable level of progress towards completion of a formal professional training programme with an appropriate professional body
  • Able to demonstrate experience and expertise within the relevant technical field, probably gained in a Graduate Engineer role or equivalent
  • Able to produce technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working under supervision
