Job Details

The Role:

Amey's Transport Planners are involved in the development of a wide variety of transportation strategies for road, rail and active travel schemes.

We have a small, friendly and growing team of seven transport planners in Edinburgh who work very effectively together and with other Amey transport planners across the UK to produce high quality results for our clients.

As a Transport Planner for Amey, you will have the opportunity to work on projects from around the UK which will involve traffic modelling, project management and collaboration with design engineers and client liaison (including some site visits). Whilst you may have worked in a more localised and/or specialised area within Traffic Planning previously, you will be given the opportunity to develop your skill set across the full Traffic Planning remit.

Some of the current projects in our Edinburgh office include: the dualling of the A96 in Aberdeenshire; improved links from Montrose to the A90 in Angus; congestion relief on the A876 in Clackmannanshire; a review of speed limits in North Lanarkshire; diversity impact assessments, pedestrian modelling and new wayfinding signs at Kettering and Wellingborough railway stations in Northamptonshire; and the case for station improvements and extra services on the Cross Country rail franchise in Cambridgeshire.

This is an opportunity for someone with a background in Transport Planning (either as an Assistant Transport Planner or through an educational route such as PhD), Urban Planning or as a Strategy Officer; or from a civil highways/rail design route with some traffic planning experience who is looking to diversify.

Whilst this would ideally be a full time role, we are open to and can accommodate part time and job share options.

If applicable, our mentors will support you as you work towards Chartership and can offer a bonus of up to £5000 on completion. We find our team is constantly learning new technical and managerial skills as transport planning evolves in Amey.

In a typical week you may:

  • Develop, run and document your work on a variety of traffic and pedestrian models including 'Saturn' and 'Paramics' (We provide expert support to help you develop your modelling skills.);
  • Run traffic economic models to calculate the benefits of road, rail and pedestrian schemes;
  • Manage small scale projects such as modelling the impacts of proposed trunk road lane closures for maintenance purposes, and undertake liaison with stakeholders;
  • Support senior and principal transport planners in the development of a wide range of road, rail, walking and cycling schemes including the application of WebTAG/ScotTAG and STAG, business cases, feasibility and preliminary design;
  • Help support and supervise graduate transport planners;
  • Work closely with and provide transport planning advice to scheme design engineers.

To be successful you will:

  • Be able to demonstrate developing experience and expertise within the relevant technical field, probably gained in an Assistant Transport Planner role or equivalent
  • Be able to produce or oversee the production of technically sound transport planning solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working under supervision
  • Have experience in undertaking project related tasks associated with health, safety and welfare, e.g. Construction (Design and Management) Regulations
  • Be able to demonstrate an understanding of technical governance procedures within a consulting engineering environment
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in an appropriate subject
  • An agreed programme of actions towards successful achievement of either Transport Planning Professional (TPP) status, Chartered Engineer status or Incorporated Engineer status
