Job description

The Maritime & Coastguard Agency has started an ambitious IT transformation programme that will deliver improved capability across an expanded IT workforce. We seek to improve all technology services whilst supporting the wider business on its own transformation requirements and ensuring IT aligns to their needs.

We are looking for Application Operations Engineers, to operate within our teams which are based either in Southampton or Fareham, dependant on team allocation. You will support, lead and maintain a single application or a suite of applications using a variety of technologies.

This could involve you working with SQL databases, MS Windows, Azure, AWS, MS SharePoint, Office365, SCCM, MS Dynamics and some coding. You will ensure applications are available within service level agreements and are working to design. You will maintain software levels and the security of the applications.
This role provides you with a fantastic opportunity to influence key IT functions at the MCA, helping to shape and build an environment that makes a real difference for the UK public.
 

Responsibilities

Include and not limited to:
• To deliver software components to enable MCA product delivery and operation;
• To maintain applications using validated frameworks and technologies;
• To support delivery against the team's technical and security strategy;
• To liaise with product managers and technical architects to explore and suggest appropriate technical solutions to achieve the required product features as well as monitoring technical progress against plans.
• Being a great partner with MCA suppliers and partners.
• To be responsible for work quality, ensuring it meets the technical standards for all MCA systems and applications
• To monitor work against the delivery schedules closely and provide progress updates and report any issues or technical difficulties to the senior leadership team on a regular basis.

You will operate to a normal weekday working pattern consisting of a 7.4 hour working day and over the course of a year you will work 1931 net conditioned hours. You will sometimes be required to occasionally work outside of normal conditioned hours, and to work/travel on official duty within the UK and short-term visits overseas.

About You

You will also have knowledge of the following areas:
• Using relevant Operating Systems including performing basic administrative tasks.
• Service support and management, particularly around scalability, availability and performance.
• Awareness of test-driven development alongside use of automated test frameworks.
• Awareness of Agile delivery methodologies.
• Working experience in an environment where products must be delivered to specific time-scales.
• Ability to rapidly and effectively understand and translate product and business requirements into technical solutions.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is an executive agency of the United Kingdom working to prevent the loss of lives at sea and is responsible for implementing British and international maritime law and safety policy. It is also responsible for land based search and rescue helicopter operations from 2015.

Its responsibilities include coordinating search and rescue (SAR) on the coastline and at sea through His Majesty's Coastguard (HMCG), ensuring that ships meet international and UK safety standards, monitoring and preventing coastal water pollution and testing and issuing Merchant Navy Certificates of Competency (licences) for ships' officers and crew to STCW requirements The organisation is led by Virginia McVea, its Chief Executive, who took up post in February 2023.The MCA are chiefly responsible for the syllabus and national training standards issued by the Merchant Navy Training Board (based at the UK Chamber of Shipping).
