Job description

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) is part of the Department for Transport (DfT). Our purpose is to ‘Improve aviation safety by determining the circumstances and causes of air accidents and serious incidents and promoting action to prevent recurrence’. We investigate accidents and serious incidents to civil aircraft in the UK and overseas where there is a UK interest.

We are looking for two Facilities Officers who will report to the Facilities Manager (FM) at the AAIB. The AAIB is based on a large attractive site between Farnborough and Aldershot in Hampshire, and includes office accommodation, hangars and a wreckage compound, set in a naturally-landscaped site of approximately 10 acres.

You will be responsible for covering our reception, answering our switchboard and ensuring that all visitors to site have followed the correct security procedures whilst on site. You will support the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) response to any major aircraft accident and other operational needs.
 

Responsibilities

- Answering the switchboard and covering reception , taking care of visitors and contractors between 0815-1700 hrs Monday - Thursday (1630 hrs on Fridays)

- Coordinating arrangements for branch vehicles, carrying out regular checks and maintenance of the fleet

- Managing Branch fuel cards, ensuring records are accurate and up-to-date and that the fleet diary is handled efficiently

- Transporting visitors or staff to and from local train stations or airports occasionally, and on occasion transport packages or small aircraft parts, using Branch vehicles, including outside office hours.

- Overseeing contractors and assisting the FM to manage the contract.

Additional information

You will be required to hold a full driving licence valid in the UK .
You may be asked to join an on-call rota to provide support in the field or from the AAIB’s offices and respond to issues on site out-of-office hours. If asked to join the rota, in addition to the basic salary, on-call and out-of-hours Recruitment and Retention Allowances (RRAs) would be paid once fully trained .

Due to the nature of AAIB operations, the successful candidate will be required to speak with accident victims, bereaved relatives and witnesses, particularly when they are visitors to the AAIB’s offices. They may also be exposed to information and material including imagery (video and photographs) of a sensitive or distressing nature. It is essential that candidates take into consideration these requirements before applying for the post. If successful at sift you will be required to participate in a well-being and traumatic stress risk questionnaire and a telephone review in advance of your interview. This will take place after the sift has been completed.

The AAIB site is in a semi-rural area and is not served by public transport, but there is a secure car park on site.
