BEIS has recently concluded a major programme of work to change the way we provide technology services. We have moved to a cloud model, which gives us flexibility and bandwidth to be brave in the services we offer to our colleagues. To continue the growth of the organisation we are seeking candidates to build and drive both our Digital and Data offerings to colleagues and businesses.

Job description

There are circa 180 people in Digital, Data and Technology at BEIS, working across a range of specialisms, in agile multi-disciplinary teams.

We build and operate tools that provide support to businesses across the UK. Our public-facing services are visited millions of times each year and the tools we’re developing for our staff will become an essential part of their daily working lives.

We deliver digital products and services that are central to BEIS’ strategy of making the UK’s trading environment competitive.

The team is looking to grow to meet the department’s ambitions. To do so, we are placing a strong emphasis on developing our staff, providing opportunities for learning and encouraging a good work-life balance.

Responsibilities

The role:

As a Developer at BEIS, you will work in a multidisciplinary team, alongside user researchers, designers, product managers, and technical experts.

As a team, you will develop digital tools that form part of the integrated technology services across BEIS.

Day to day you might do some of the following:

•Develop software to meet user needs;

•Write clean, secure, and well-tested code;

•Follow best-practice guidelines and help to improve those guidelines;

•Operate the services you build and identify issues in production;

•Coach and mentor more junior colleagues.

You might use some of the following tools or languages at times in this role: Microsoft ASP.NET, C# , SQL, TypeScript, PowerShell, React, Microsoft Dynamics, Javascript, Node.js and Azure.

1) Modern Standards Approach

You can competently use a modern standards approach and guide others in so doing. (Relevant skill level: practitioner)

2) Programming and Build (Software Engineering)

You collaborate with others when necessary to review specifications and use these agreed specifications to design, code, test and document programs or scripts of medium to high complexity, using the right standards and tools. (Relevant skill level: practitioner)

3) Systems Integration

You can build and test simple interfaces between systems, or work on more complex integration as part of a wider team. (Relevant skill level: working)

4) Service Support

You can help fix faults following agreed procedures. You can carry out agreed maintenance tasks on infrastructure. (Relevant skill level: working)

5) User Focus

You know how to collaborate with user researchers and can represent users internally. You understand the difference between user needs and the desires of the user. You can champion user research to focus on all users. You can prioritise and define approaches to understand the user story, guiding others in doing so. You can offer recommendations on the best tools and methods to be used. (Relevant skill level: practitioner)
