Nest

Nest is the National Employment Savings Trust. It runs an occupational pension scheme, being a trust-based scheme on a not-for-profit basis in the interests of its members. Nest was initially set up by the government to give every worker in the UK somewhere to save for retirement and we’re now one of the largest schemes in the UK.

We look after the pensions of more than nine million savers with nearly £15bn of members’ assets under management and we’re growing by around £5bn every year. We have a strong customer focus and a true social purpose with environmental and social governance at the forefront of what we do. We want people to look forward to the future with optimism and to give our members bigger pensions in a better world.

The Employers’ Panel was set up in accordance with the Pensions Act 2008 and Nest Order 2010. It represents participating employers and intermediaries by providing advice on the operation, development and amendment of the scheme. Nest has ensured that high quality pension provision is available to all who require it.

The Employers’ Panel currently has 12 members. The Employers’ Panel meets about four times a year to discuss the Scheme’s development and operation. During the 2019/20 financial year, the Panel had a busy program of work and were consulted on a broad range of topics that affect employers and intermediaries, including customer engagement, proposed changes to the Statement of Investment Principles (SIP), the formation of Nest Corporation’s investment subsidiary, Nest Invest, and the pensions dashboard.

Panel recommendations are considered by Nest and some of those recommendations have been implemented into the Scheme over the years.

Company

NEST is a great UK success story.

Established in 2010, NEST is a critical pillar of the Government’s automatic enrolment programme, with a public service obligation (PSO) to accept any employer wishing to use the scheme to discharge their automatic enrolment duties.   From a standing start, we have delivered a high quality, low cost pension scheme open to all, which has not only delivered on its mission, but has also helped to drive up standards and best practice across the industry. Now with over 6 million members and well over half a million participating employers, NEST is playing a critical role in helping people save for their retirement - many of them low to moderate earners who may be saving for the first time, and moving jobs frequently.   NEST now occupies an important place in the pensions market and will deliver high quality pensions to mass market consumers for many years to come, leveraging its scale to deliver value through the combination of low costs, market leading investment solutions and modernised services all overseen by strong Trustee governance.
