We are growing! Here at the Maritime and Coastguard agency we are developing a new and innovative team to cover key areas such as Decarbonisation and Autonomy - we are looking for forward thinking professionals to help build and develop this team to help create a better future.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has formed the Maritime Future Technologies team to drive forward and support implementation of cutting-edge innovation in both Emission Reduction and Autonomy in the Maritime sector. This new function that has been setup to enable the UK to lead the way in Maritime Emission Reduction and Autonomous Vessels by 2050.

To address the challenges in this sector the team aims to be dynamic, fast paced, and collaborative. Through an understanding and supportive approach, it will facilitate the implementation of trials and projects, support regulation updates and drive forward a much-needed change in industry.

Facilitating the implementation of projects in the short term on an individual basis. By acting as a focal point and connecting various stakeholders. Enabling it to become the interface between innovation in industry and regulatory/policy function.

Supporting regulatory change by learning from projects within the current regulatory framework and challenging the approach to maritime regulation.

Influencing to drive change and direction of industry through engagement, and informed opinion becoming an expert in the sector and making the connections between ideas and reality.

To ensure the UK is seen as a worldwide role model, at the heart of the global maritime autonomy industry and is proactive in driving the transition to zero emission shipping. Being agile enough to enable the UK to gain a significant share of the economic, environmental and health benefits associated with a technologically advanced and sustainable maritime industry.

This is an exciting time to join the MCA as the Maritime Autonomy Engineering Lead. You will be responsible for leading a dedicated team responsible for interfacing between industry innovation and policy with regards to maritime autonomy in order to achieve the Maritime 2050 plan and the Technology and Innovation in UK Maritime route map. You will also lead on the MCA's change and adaption of safe regulations related to the introduction of autonomy in the maritime sector.
 

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Leading in the development and maintenance of the team's programme/work plan and the deliver against the plan. This will include prioritising where we focus our efforts/engagement.

• Responsible for facilitating the development of maritime regulation (within MCA remit) and engagement with other regulators that have an interest to enable the uptake of autonomy in the maritime sector.

• Responsible for facilitating industry stakeholders input to the regulatory update process in light of emerging technologies. Including cases for best practice.

• Providing input and insight to Maritime and Coastguard Agency / Department For Transport and other key government stakeholders on emerging technology that will effect policy and regulation in the future of the shipping industry.

• Creating and maintaining strong links with industry/academia to develop an understanding of the technical aspects of autonomous systems and associated risks.

• Support the development of the UK training capability to ensure it is fit for future technologies.

About you

Coming to us with a core discipline in systems or safety engineering with proven experience of working with emerging technologies (including autonomy). You will be an ambitious individual who wants to make a difference, you think outside the box and challenge the norm. You have excellent management skills and always lead by example. Using your brilliant communication style, you are able to relay messages to any target audience with ease, translating technical language for those not technical minded. You thrive in a fast paced and agile environment and are experienced dealing with a large number of diverse stakeholders.

The successful post holder will able a strong leader takes ownership and seek out shared interests beyond own area of responsibility, understanding the impact actions have on the organisation. You will need to be aware of economic, social, political, environmental and technological developments and how this drives service delivery and policy implementation.

You pride yourself on your exemplary attention to detail. You are a forward thinker and are looking for a role where you can combine your previous experience using new technologies and making the world a better place to be.

To be successful for this post you will have previous experience of project / task management within a commercial setting and have an understanding of safety case approach.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is an executive agency of the United Kingdom working to prevent the loss of lives at sea and is responsible for implementing British and international maritime law and safety policy. It is also responsible for land based search and rescue helicopter operations from 2015.
