Volunteer Development Manager
We are seeking a Volunteer Development Manager to work for one of the UK’s top animal welfare charities based in Watford, striving to give every animal the best chance of finding a new home.
Position: Volunteer Development Manager
Location: Flexible – Can be based at the Head Office in Watford or remotely based within reasonable travelling distance of the centres
Salary: £30,000 per annum
Benefits: 25 days annual leave (plus bank holidays), contributory pension scheme, access to free 24/7 support service including legal, financial, emotional and medical advice.

About the role:
As the Volunteer Development Manager, you will be working with one of the UK's top animal welfare charities operating five rehoming centres and three shops across the south of England. You will be responsible for the recruitment, placement and retention of volunteers across the organisation.
You will be involved in developing the overall volunteer strategy and plan to deliver the Trust’s strategic objectives. You will oversee the ongoing recruitment, training, role matching, relationships, retention and supervision of the Trust’s volunteers to ensure best practice is followed and maintained.
You will also be required to identify new volunteering opportunities and work with external organisations to promote volunteering.
Some of your key responsibilities will include:
- Develop and implement the volunteering strategy, policies and procedures
- Oversee volunteer recruitment and management
- Promote volunteering, both internally and externally
- Identify new volunteering opportunities
About you:
As Volunteer Development Manager you will be an outstanding communicator with a high level of interpersonal skills and be able to offer a proactive approach to volunteer opportunities and support.
You will have an empathy with volunteers and an understanding of their needs, as well as the ability to work and relate to a diverse range of people.
Finally, you will be able to inspire and motivate others and be confident networking with other organisations and professionals.
Essential skills and experience include:
- Significant senior management experience
- Experience of managing volunteers
- Managing change and creating positive working environments
- Developing and implementing systems, policies and procedures
- The ability to be flexible and work as part of a team
Although not essential, experience or knowledge of using databases to record volunteer information would be beneficial for this role.
As this post will be responsible for volunteers across the country, the ability to drive and to be willing to work away from home on occasion is required.
