Principal Systems Engineer

BAE Systems Naval Ships team in Glasgow are looking for an experienced engineer to support the installation of their Shared Infrastructure product onto the new Type 26 Global Combat Ship. Our Naval Ships business design and manufacture a range of ships and state of the art combat systems and equipment, from offshore patrol vessels through to the latest City Class Type 26 frigates that we are building for the UK Royal Navy, and the Australian Hunter Class and Canadian Surface Combatant, we are a business that operates on a truly global platform and can offer a wide range of opportunities where you can play your part in these challenging and exciting projects.

We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Systems Engineer at our site in Scotstoun to be a key advisor involved in the installation and integration of Shared Infrastructure Hardware in the Type 26 frigate. As a Principal Systems Engineer, you will be ensuring all the installed computer rooms and equipment is fit for use in accordance to the agreed design documentation for the ship. You will be liaising with operations, planning to align for a smooth transition from store to ship throughout the ship commissioning process.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to work on one of the most exciting stages of the Type 26 programme, the installation and commissioning of the equipment on the ship. The role is pivotal to the successful installation stage, giving great visibility and responsibility within the business.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Systems Engineer will involve:

  • The primary point of contact for the installation of SI Hardware.
  • Define and lead technical aspects of sequencing for Setting to Work activities to de-risk the use of Shared Infrastructure in the Type 26.
  • Provide technical input into design reviews installation, test, trials, acceptance and engineering change activities.
  • Liaise with other functions (Physical Integration, Production Engineering, Manufacturing. Engineering, Operations) to ensure a smooth path through installation of SI hardware.
  • Advise other functions before and during commissioning activities.
  • Ensure all elements of the commissioning is delivered on time and in order.
  • Your skills and qualifications:

    Essential:

  • Experience of Shared Infrastructure in a Naval environment
  • Late stage ship development knowledge including installation and testing of equipment
  • Strong stakeholder management background
  • Degree or equivalent relevant experience
  • Desirable:

  • Previous roles in Systems Engineering with a Network bias
  • Navy background
  • Ship refit experience

    You will be a skilled communicator, both written through report writing and verbal, possessing a good level of diplomacy and influencing skills to enable successful interaction with a range of stakeholders. A calm but assertive approach, to difficult situations and work to timescales you will have excellent attention to detail, identifying problems and improvements through to resolution.
