This is a key role ensuring The Charity’s success and impacting the lives of those affected by brain tumours. We’re looking for new members to join our Board, to fill vacancies created by members completing their term. Supporting the Chair, and in partnership with the Trustee team and Chief Executive, you’ll provide support and advice on matters impacting The Charity.

The Board meets four times a year with committee meetings four times a year and occasional events. Most meetings are virtual or held in Fleet, Hampshire. We anticipate each trustee will sit on two committees. The time commitment for the role is likely to be one day per month. The term of office is four years, renewable for a further term. All reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

We wish to encourage applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds who will bring a breadth of experience to the Board. We believe diversity makes us stronger, however, this doesn’t always manifest itself as overtly as we would like. We particularly welcome applications from those who are underrepresented on our Board, including individuals from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Communities and under 30’s.

We are keen to ensure that we have the right expertise across our Board to match The Charity’s future needs, and are looking for applicants with skills and experience in one of the following areas: Equality, diversity & inclusion, pharma and biotech, finance, safeguarding, digital commerce. We're also looking for individuals who have lived experience of a paediatric brain tumour.

What are we looking for?

Previous board or Non-Executive director experience isn’t a requirement; we’re looking for people who are willing to learn about charity governance and the legal responsibilities of a trustee. We’ll provide training and buddying to ensure first-time trustees feel fully supported. The right person should be able to provide oversight and a balance of support and challenge to our Senior Leadership Team. They will be passionate about The Brain Tumour Charity’s vision, mission and values and will be an effective ambassador for the organisation.

They should be able to demonstrate:

  • An understanding or knowledge of the needs of those personally affected by this disease, particularly children.
  • A strong empathy for the aims, objective and activities of The Brain Tumour Charity.
  • An ability to analyse information; use good, independent judgement and challenge constructively when necessary.
  • An excellent, confident and persuasive communicator.
  • A good sense of humour with the desire to be part of a high energy and dynamic organisation that often addresses difficult issues but is equally committed to having some fun doing it.
  • Ability to demonstrate commercial acumen.
  • Experience at a senior level or previous experience of the third sector (desirable).
  • Experience of fundraising, particularly with major donors (desirable).

What difference will you make?

This is an opportunity to play a pivotal role ensuring The Charity’s success and positively impacting the lives of those affected by brain tumours. This is an exciting time to join The Charity's board and support our future work, as we develop our next 5-year strategy.

What's in it for the volunteer?

As a trustee, you’ll have...

  • An induction, training and support for first-time trustees.
  • The chance to be part of a passionate team, network with senior professionals and gain a deeper insight into The Charity’s work.
  • Opportunities to influence strategic decisions and key projects.
  • Invaluable experience to take forward to future roles.

To apply, please submit your CV (including comprehensive details of key achievements and responsibilities) along with a short covering letter of application. In your covering letter, please summarise your motivations for applying for the role and address the role description, key competencies and person specification.
