Sutton Hoo is home to one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of all time. Every year over 100,000 people visit Sutton Hoo to see a place often referred to as the first page of English history. The recent Netflix hit film 'The Dig' is based on the original story of the famous 1939 dig instigated by the landowner at the time, Mrs Edith Pretty and led by local amateur archaeologist Basil Brown. The film has encouraged a new audience to Sutton Hoo and this Summer the property experienced higher than average visitor numbers.

The Anglo-Saxon burial site of Sutton Hoo, near Woodbridge, Suffolk, is home to a series of burial mounds including the famed Mound One ship burial, thought to have potentially been the resting place of the Anglo-Saxon king R??dwald.

The property also consists of the High Hall exhibition, Tranmer House (former home of Edith Pretty), a second hand book shop, caf??, kiosk, shop, Viewing Tower and scenic walks throughout the estate. Sutton Hoo also runs a busy education programme.

Thanks to the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Sutton Hoo will shortly be completing a GBP4 million project, which has radically enhanced the experience for visitors.

Releasing the Sutton Hoo Story is a project that interprets this internationally important site in a new light, giving primacy to its archaeological landscape and the powerful and evocative stories it has revealed.

Improved access to the Royal Burial Ground and the surrounding landscape, dynamic new interpretation and learning programmes ensure that Sutton Hoo fulfils its role as a site of international significance and the place to discover the very beginnings of modern England.
