Job Details

We are recruiting PCSOs (Police Community Support Officer) - Join us and make a difference

  • The starting salary for a PCSO is £21,808.98. In addition, you could also be entitled to up to 20% Shift allowance dependant on your shift pattern.
  • You can apply if you have a live application with another Police force.

British Transport Police is unique. We are a national police force, working closely with the rail industry to ensure the safety and security of nearly 3 billion passenger journeys and over 100 million tons of freight every year across the rail network throughout Great Britain, including the London Underground. The world in which we work is fast-paced, operationally and commercially demanding, and constantly changing.

Our job is to protect and serve the railway environment and its community, keeping levels of disruption, crime and the fear of crime as low as possible and our police community support officers (PCSOs) are vital to achieving this.

You will have the same responsibilities that Home Office PCSOs have but focused within a railway environment which will also allow you to enforce BTP Byelaws.

Neighbourhood policing is as important to BTP as it is to other forces; it’s simply that our neighbourhood looks different to your local town. It is more transient and will pose just as many challenges.

No two days will be the same as you help protect and reassure the passengers, railway staff and retailers within the BTP Community. As well as conducting visible patrols at stations, you’ll confidently deal with a number of tasks, including crowd control; dealing with security threats; undertaking minor crime investigation; working with your community to build and maintain relationships and partnerships, and providing support and assistance to Police Officers.

To rise to all these challenges takes a special kind of person. You’ll need to be resilient with a real flair for customer service. You’ll have the ability to engage with the community and forge strong links with our partner organisations.

PCSOs need to be prepared to work shifts, including weekends and bank holidays.

What’s in it for you?

Being a PCSO is not an easy role and you may be thinking ‘Is it worth it? What will I get out of this?’

The answer is: A lot. There’s so much to gain from becoming a PCSO.

In return for your hard work you will:

  • Receive a basic starting salary of £21,808.98 rising year on year to a maximum of £25,408.29 per annum for up to 7 years’ service. You will also receive up to 20% shift allowance depending on shift pattern.
  • Receive 28 days holiday (rising to 30 days with service)
  • Travel Benefits (dependent on location)
  • have the opportunity of internal progression to become a Police Officer.
  • have a rewarding job where no two days are ever the same
  • be constantly challenged and always learning
  • be valued for your contribution to your community
  • have excellent pay progression, a pension scheme and benefits package

Sound interesting? Join us on the journey and bring your creativity and commitment on board and help us make a difference.

Internal PCSOs are not eligible to apply.

We want our organisation to be as diverse as the community it serves and welcome applications from everyone.  Please be assured that all applications will be judged on their individual merit and no other factors.

Application process and eligibility

Applying is easy; simply click on ‘Apply’ at the bottom left of this page and you will be taken through the process.  All applications must be completed online via this method. • You have been unsuccessful following shortlisting or online ability testing for a BTP PCSO in the last 3 months.
  • You have ever received a custodial sentence (other cautions, convictions and involvement with the police must be declared but are not necessarily a bar to employment).
  • You have been declared bankrupt, have a CCJ or an un-managed IVA.
  • You have tattoos of any kind on your face or neck.

For further information on our eligibility criteria, please have a read through the attached recruitment pack as it contains lots of useful information for you.

We won’t be able to accept applications after the closing date/time for any reason, including technical errors.  To avoid disappointment, we encourage you to submit your application prior to the deadline. Following your application being completed and submitted, our team will then let you know if you have passed or failed the application form stage of the process via email.

If you want to ask us any awkward or ‘obvious’ questions, if you are you unsure whether your personal circumstances are suitable for a career as a PCSO but don’t know how to talk to us about it, if you have any questions about the application process, please email our friendly and helpful team where we will be happy to help you:  [email protected].

BTP has undertaken a review of Police Staff pensions and as a result of this the Police Staff pension will be changing. The current police staff pension is a Defined Benefit scheme which is administered by the Railways Pension scheme. The new pension scheme which is launching is a Defined Contribution scheme which is administered by Royal London. The new pension scheme is awaiting formal approval and an introductory date is not finalised. The earliest this will be is July 2022.  If you have an queries, please contact the recruitment team.
