Chief Strategy Office:

The Chief Strategy Office is a newly formed division under a new Chief Strategy Officer.  Accountable for developing the group wide strategy including growth opportunities such as M&A, new technologies or strategic direction.  This critical function is focused on setting the direction for Inmarsat globally and will work in close partnership with all functions and regions.

The focus of your role

To provide an external view and market insights that both informs and directs corporate strategy & planning as a major source of competitive advantage. The Senior Director of Strategic Market Intelligence is a key member of the Chief Strategy Office who will lead the management and alignment of insight and strategy within Inmarsat across the BUs: networking internally and externally; ensuring the availability and delivery of all intelligence that leads to accurate and agile strategic insights, that enable collaborative and speedy decision-making.

The scope of the role includes the provision of strategic, forward-looking and medium to long term focused Market Intelligence in support of the realisation of long range strategic and business & infrastructure planning; ensuring the delivery of regular market and competitor updates to the Senior Leadership Team, Exec and Board; building Market Intelligence capability to the level of industry best practice, including creation of a team, interaction with key stakeholders in the BUs and central functions, as well as reinforcing a wider intelligence network in cooperation with the Business and Customer Intelligence teams.

Qualifications

Key Responsibilities:     

  • To establish and lead all aspects of market intelligence in terms of process, people and data / technology infrastructure, with a benchmark of creating and maintaining best in class industry capability. This will entail the setting up of a fully formed and centralised team in support of Strategic and Business Unit Market Intelligence.
  • To produce regular reports that inform all strategic planning processes with overall market perspectives, trends, competitor analysis, as well as BU specific intel on the total addressable market, competitors, and industry dynamics for all of Inmarsat’s markets and activities.
  • To be responsible for company alignment around market definitions and Target Addressable Markets.
  • To source and communicate intelligence and insights that enable Inmarsat to explore areas where the company does not yet play (markets, competition, suppliers, technology).
  • To inform strategy and validation of new business opportunities as well as planned longer term initiatives.                                
  • To provide excellent, accurate and agile market intelligence for large and strategically significant quality business cases.
  • To update and maintain the internal infrastructure for best in class Market intelligence databases and tools etc.
  • To manage relationships with third party suppliers for maximum efficiency and cost effectiveness across the business.                                                                                                            
  • To establish and maintain a professional SMI team in all aspects based on industry standards.
  • To identify key high potential employees with succession plan, career development plan and training & development plan.
  • To participate in industry conferences as well as job related training.       
  • To make job related trainings available to subordinates in support of technical aspects of the job.                                                                   

Essential Knowledge and Skills you’ll bring to the role:

Macro-environment: Ability to demonstrate extensive knowledge of the Mobile Satcom industry trends & events, and market & competitor dynamics is vital in order to network credibly both internally and externally.

Strategic insight: Involvement in corporate, company, commercial and go to market level strategy and planning.                                                                                                            

Financial: Financial management / accounting skills with ability to understand and interpret financial statements and financial KPIs.

Business planning process: Strategic LTP, Business Case Alignment, Monthly Activity / Resource Planning.

Continuous Improvement: To assess, improve, implement and evaluate business processes that can maximize the productivity of the SMI team, promoting cross-functional working in the course of commercial business activation.             

People / Relationship Management: Creative and inspirational leadership, stakeholder management, ability to manage and leverage relationships cross-functionally, collaborative problem solving / opportunity led mindset, KPI development, training and development planning, recruitment, induction, formal training, coaching.

Operation Management: Information exchange, board level communication, analysis and reporting.

You will ideally have:

  • Degree level education
  • Demonstrable experience in data management / market and competitor intelligence
  • Proven experience in a relevant Satcom related industry
  • Proven people management & leadership qualities
