Chief Technology Office 

Inmarsat’s Chief Technology Office (CTO) business unit sits at the core of our business and focuses on innovative technology development and engineering. The CTO maintains a centre of excellence for technology and broader infrastructure-related innovation, translating market needs into core expansion programmes to enable market development. We ensure that Inmarsat’s products and services are constantly pushing the boundaries of satellite communications.  The CTO team is responsible for delivering Inmarsat development programmes, including satellites and launchers, ground infrastructure (ground stations, networks, user terminals and access technology), regulatory, market access and product and service development. 

Job Description

Primary role purpose:

The Principal Network Engineer will work within a small team within the Technology Delivery group who are responsible for all engineering aspects (from initial concept to introduction of service) for Inmarsat’s Aviation Safety Services. 

Within this team the postholder will take the lead on the security aspects in the systems engineering design, specification and implementation of new communications and surveillance services.  This work is needed to address emerging requirements for Air Traffic Management, as part of ESA’s Iris programme. https://www.esa.int/Applications/Telecommunications_Integrated_Applications/Iris_for_aviation

The role requires close working with industry partners within the Iris consortium including aircraft manufacturers (i.e. Airbus and Boeing), avionics suppliers, and air traffic communication service providers that operate ground connectivity for ATC centres and airline operational services.  The role will represent Inmarsat as a technical expert in meetings with suppliers and must be capable of dealing confidently with experts in similar and adjacent disciplines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyse requirements for next generation safety services with an emphasis on security aspects.
  • Conduct safety risk assessment, focussing on security threats and mitigations.
  • Derive engineering solutions that address the above security vulnerabilities and define the related management processes that will enable a cohesive approach to secure operations
  • Perform the validation and verification of implemented systems, e.g. penetration testing of Inmarsat infrastructure; plus unit level and end-end system testing.
  • Work with others within the Inmarsat’s Technology and Operations teams to achieve above.
  • Form strong technical relationships with peers at satcom avionic manufacturers, airframers, ESA, and Inmarsat service providers.

Qualifications

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • Degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering or equivalent
  • Extensive experience of designing and assessing security of IPv4 and IPv6 networked systems
  • Fluent in telecommunications technologies, an understanding of IP-based mobile networking technologies and satellite systems
  • Knowledge of PKI
  • Strong analytical capability, able to conduct system engineering and technology trade-offs
  • Strong inter-personal skills including the ability to establish and maintain relationships and trust
  • Ability to work in a complex, international matrix organization alongside 3rd-parties

Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of networking technology including routers, switches, and firewalls
  • Working in a ISO27000 framework or equivalent
  • Good knowledge of software development and engineering techniques
  • Experience in the identification and capture of IT functional and non-functional requirements for large, complex projects
  • Knowledge of Inmarsat and other satellite communications systems
  • Knowledge of aeronautical Air Traffic Service domain in areas such as standards (e.g. ARINC, RTCA, Eurocae), or Certification, or Aeronautical Telecommunications Network (ATN), or Air traffic DataLink Services
